The British monarchy should be abolished:
The Royals interfere in politics behind closed doors which is not good for democracy .
The monarchy entrenches elitism and the class system.
The king or queen only acts as a head of state but he/she does not have any political power. He/she only signs the legislation but does not decide re. the passing of laws.
The king or queen is not an elected head of state.
The cost of maintaining the monarchy is exorbitant, costing approximately £33.3 million in 2013. The lifestyle of the monarchy is very expensive to maintain and the ordinary taxpayer pays for it.
The monarchy is outdated, still promoting gender inequality as evidenced by the rule that the sons should be the first heirs to the throne and not the daughters.
The monarchy represents a feudalistic society; thus, promoting social division.
The monarchs are not really qualified to be heads of states, they are simply placed there by birth.
The British monarchy should not be abolished:
They boost tourism and brings in revenue for the country.
The monarchy offers continuity to Great Britain.
It adds color to the nation.
The monarchy is a long-standing tradition and is a part of history which makes Britain famous.
The royal family supports around 3000 charities.
The royal family represents Great Britain in several official events within the country and abroad which strengthens the diplomatic and economic ties with other nations.
The monarchy “acts as a focus for national identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity”.
Unlike other government institutions, the monarchy is very popular and well-loved both in the country and around the world.
