Success in college is ascertained by many factors; many people hold dual opinions such as the effort exerted by the professors in college is the main factor determining a student’s success. On the other hand, other people follow that success in college is guaranteed by a student’s own efforts and hard work. I also agree with the statement that it is the student’s effort and hard work which makes him succeed in college. Firstly, it is that particular student’s own interest in college and education which determines how well he wishes to do in academics (Penn State). More importantly, if they are studying what they enjoy the most, then their education becomes an enjoyable task for them which they enjoy and are more willing to study by themselves.
It is true that a professor needs to work hard and push students to study, in fact, it is a cumulative effort on the part of all the professors that teach a student. Yet, it is up to the student to gather what the professor is teaching and to start paying attention to everything in class because it is the attention paid in classes that help to understand the subject. It is the job of the professors in college to guide a student with the education he is receiving, however, it is the student’s responsibility to follow the professor and culminate the words being said into the actual effort. Professors can only remind their students that they need to study and what failure will cost them and can help students with assignments and lectures (Penn State). Students will only succeed if they work hard and give more time to studying, rather than depending on their professors for doing all the work for them.
A majority of students in college works part-time in order to pay the college fee. This means their time is divided for most of the year, and they are juggling between work and education. In such a case, professors can hardly be blamed if students don’t turn out successful because they cannot study and pay attention to their education as they are too busy with work. A professor can only be blamed if he is not competent with the subject or gives his students a tough time but otherwise, it is the student’s responsibility to manage work with their education. Hence, a student holds the key to success in this case as time management, devotion to studies and placing priorities is his job and he must manage them efficiently (Penn State).
Furthermore, students and professors work together from the start into the academic year all through the end with the aim of helping the student succeed. If the professor remained secret to success, then every student would be passing with flying colors, and there wouldn’t be any dropouts or failures in college (Penn State). This not being the case, students are held responsible for their success in college. Those who do not leave their studies to the last minute before the exam and prepare from the beginning have no problem during examinations. Students who realize that the professor and student work as a team can become successful (Penn State).
Lastly, students with a non-serious attitude are the ones who usually fail college. A student needs to ascertain how their emotional behavior will be so that they can pay attention to studies. Those who waste time in the wrong company and get into bad habits have a hard time studying (Penn State). Backbenchers might be non-serious with studies for which professors cannot be blamed. College is different from high school hence students need to take responsibility for their actions. Successful students will pay attention to lectures, respond well to their professors and keep a positive attitude that will help them in succeeding in college.
