Interpersonal communication
Apparently, interpersonal communication is an integral part of everyday human relations. This is why I elected to discuss this particular concept of communication. Among the primary principles of interpersonal communication is the factor of inevitability. Arguably, communication between persons is inescapable considering that man is not an island. Human beings communicate with one another in various contexts for different reasons. Interpersonal communication, which has been described variously as the conveyance of messages and ideas between two or more people at different levels, is a contextual concept. The fact that communication varies from context to another forms the second principle of interpersonal communication. The third principle is that interpersonal communication is complicated. The major reason behind such complication is the fact that personalities are different and people will always react differently to different messages.
Why interpersonal communication?
The primary reason why I selected this concept is the fact that interpersonal communication is exceptionally important in various aspects of human life. For instance, the concept is essential in establishing leadership and managerial elements in an organization or institution. Among the primary characteristics of an efficient leader is the possession of near perfect interpersonal communication skills. Such skills enable a leader to influence the rest of the group effectively, without experiencing much resistance. The second importance of interpersonal communication is rooted in the fact that this concept forms the foundation of teamwork.
Teams are based on the like-mindedness of the individual members. Such like-mindedness can only be achieved through interpersonal communication. Worth noting is the fact that interpersonal communication can take the structure of both oral and nonverbal communication. Virtually all sectors of human relations rely on interpersonal communications. Such things as business transactions cannot be effectively executed without interpersonal communication. Business entails the conveyance of messages bearing the interest of the party. Similarly, such important things as education re founded on interpersonal communication.
Problems worth investigating
Much like many concepts of communication, there are various challenges in interpersonal communication that need to be investigated. For instance, conflicts are a primary challenge in interpersonal communication. People have often clashed and even resorted to physical fights due to inefficiencies in interpersonal communication. Another problem worth investigation and research is the aspect of emotions. Employing emotions when generating a feedback in the communication process can result in many problems, conflicts and deadlocks being the most prominent. Previous research indicates that emotions should be separated from communication as they may hinder the effectiveness of the process. Another problem or issue worth research as far as interpersonal communication is concerned is the element of active listening. Active listening is a skill that many people do not possess. Such listening enables the parties to observe relevance. Other problems include prejudgment and misinterpretation. These issues make interpersonal communication a primary topic of research.
Personal experience
I have often found myself in argument with other people over inefficiencies in the communication process. The most notable example comes from the time when I was around thirteen years old. The issue was a simple argument over something we had learnt in class. My friend and I were arguing over the new concept. It happened that we held different views and had comprehended the concept in different ways. In a bid to prove our views right, neither of us wanted to concede defeat. As the debate heated, emotions rose and we unintentionally raised voices. What ensued was a physical confrontation as the emotions had gotten out of hand. The physical conflict was caused by the emotions that had barred open communication, sharing of ideas and active listening. This incident inspired partly my choice of interpersonal communication
