Speech analysis
She starts off the speech with an interesting story of her hairdresser. She articulates that the hairdresser knows a lot about her life, yet he does not know what she does for a living. The story appeals to the audience since it makes the speech interesting. She further describes a scenario where she was attending a dinner, and everyone was asking the obvious questions about Hollywood celebrities. However, she was uncomfortable when different people referred to her as a male. She explains that this was a clear indication that her past identity was still eminent. In the speech, she elaborated her childhood experiences as a confused Tran’s girl. Her identity had always been a challenge to her interactions with people. She would be humiliated in school as she struggled with her emotions and self identity. Lana delivers the speech in a natural manner which is instrumental in her winning the sympathy of the audience. She mentions that she has delivered one other speech, and she was hesitant since she doubted her abilities. Her strong narration skills are evident from her speech, which keeps the audience active (Gehrke 34).
When she mentions about her talkative mother, she appeals to the emotions of the audience. She explains that her mother is a pillar to her confidence and gives a story about a restaurant encounter with a waitress. The waitress comments about their similarities. This earns her applause from the audience. She further elaborates her attempts to commit suicide. Her plan was to jump on to the tracks of an oncoming train. However, before she implemented her plans she had to write a suicide note for her parents. The note ended up being a four page document. Her revelation to the audience about the note was humorous yet what she was talking about was her death. This repetitive elaboration of acceptance can be considered to be an exemplification style (Jost & Wendy 67). This marks the start of her speech climax. Her elaboration of her final acceptance as a lovable transgender provides an insight to confidence and relationships. She articulates that transgender intolerance in the society is detrimental to the wellbeing of transgender. However, acceptance should be encouraged to strengthen these people. She offers to sacrifice for those living in denial and help them move ahead in their lives. She uses emotive conjugation as a rhetoric technique to appeal to the audience to support transgender (Hart et al 26).
Conclusion
The theme of the speech is that transgender should start with acceptance to define the identity in the society. She uses deductive reasoning in her speech to persuade the audience to support transgender. Human rights across the world should be acceptance and support.
