I had an opportunity on Feb. 8, 2013 to interview Mr. Richard Haynes, attorney of Texas criminal defense at his resident, Dallas City. He is a renowned attorney who has been practicing laws over years and made tremendous contributions in criminal laws. It, therefore, seemed he would have a good understanding and be in a position to answer all my questions. This paper gives the proceedings of our interview with Mr. Haynes.
I began the interview by asking the interviewee his full name and where he works. His answer was that his name is Richard Haynes working as a private practitioner having opened his own law firm called Haynes & Boone and Richard Haynes & Associates. I asked him what drove him to become a lawyer and he replied that he decided to become a lawyer when he was working as a pre-med and made his mind to do something that one could appeal when screwed up after feeling that people in the hospital were too unnerving.
I asked the interviewee how long he has been a lawyer and the area of law he practices. His answer was that has been a lawyer for the last 57 years and presents his clients in criminal law. Since he started practicing law, he has never switched to any area of law, a move that gained him reputation. When asked what he likes about practicing law, he said that it enables him to undergo intellectual challenges as he develops abilities to argue from the basis of evidence. I also asked him the least thing he likes in the profession and he answered that it is when judges come and tell his client they are guilty as charged without giving room for appeal. He says that this is his challenged in law profession.
I asked the interviewee about his favorite case to work on and his answer was that, “when I represented a black poor-man accused of stealing tools from the construction store where he worked. The black man did not have money and i went ahead to represent him just for things to turn that the white man they worked with had been stealing and they placed the blame on this black man”. I asked Mr. Haynes if he is still happy practicing law and he responded that he is still happy practicing as he receives calls every time from people seeking his services. Despite his wife urging him to leave the profession, he is motivated by callers and do not want to resist helping as it is no longer an issue of money anymore.
I had thought the legal profession is about attending classroom lecture and making arguments on issues, which is never the case. I knew law was about taking stand and defending it, which changed after the interview with the legend lawyer as he gave me new ideas on how the profession works. It needs one to build confidence with his clients and get all the resources including facts. The more one wins cases the more he gets urge of learning more to facilitate his excellence since there are practices needed.
