Issues of national security in various Nations are perhaps the most ambivalent entities (Chen, 2007), which dominates various debates in addition to generating uniformly diverse elucidations from various population segments inclusive of the political elite. As such, sustainable development in any country calls for an abundant balance in its social, economic as well as political issues. Sustainable development places significant importance on the maintenance of natural resources. While the mentioned are useful for individual states, they indirectly impact on various issues of other nations.
Historically, the national security of Syria entails various factors inclusive but not limited to political as well as military issues. Nonetheless, despite the existence of the later, Syria has risen against all its problems to gain a global outlook. In the political context, Syria does not only face issues with Israel but the mentioned extends to the international community (Tal, 2000). Initially, political issue affecting Syria resulted from the deployment of its troops to Lebanon as it sought to achieve deliberate parity similar to that of Israel. However, the Syria troops suffered unprecedented loss to the Israeli troops.
Economically, since time immemorial, Syria relies on its tourism, and agriculture sector for sustenance of its economy (Federal Research Division, 2004). In addition its oil industry plays a crucial role in the support of its economy. However, during the 1980’s its economic dependence on the above-mentioned proved unsustainable evident by an economic downfall form eighty to thirty percent. Economic issues further extend to high unemployment rates as well as high illiteracy levels. Issues of national security in Syria are further jeopardised by social problems inclusive of limited land holdings amongst the populations (George, 2003).
Arguably, Syria’s national security issues further extend due to various rivalries existing amongst ethnic and religious minorities’ of Islamic origin existent in the country. Precisely, the control of top-level executive positions by the Alawi community has resulted to various conflicts responsible to the current civil unrest facing the country (Hitti, 2004). As such, the concerns of the United States on matters of its regional security as well as state funded terrorism are of much concern based on the enduring unrest existing in Syria. Undeniably, the unrest being experienced in Syria could result in upraise of violent Islamist groups in the country, which is directly aligned to increased terrorist attacks.
