I am most interested in enrolling as a student in the five year dentistry program at James Cook University and desire to pursue two additional years of study at the hospital after my studies so that I will be able to practice surgery. I also desire to remain at James Cook University to earn my Master’s Degree in Dentistry since I believe that this school has the best dentistry program and want to have a cohesive education throughout all of my studies.
Even though I am just completing high school, I am sure that dentistry is the career that I want to pursue. I have not only a year’s experience in the pharmacy field, but have also been fortunate enough to have been exposed to work in the dental surgery field for every weekend for the past several months. This experience has just solidified my desire and decision on my career choice.
While a student at the selective Sydney Technical High School, I have concentrated my studies in the areas of math and science. I am completing my Higher School Certificate in NSW in 2013. I have earned a distinction in math in year 11 and a distinction in chemistry in year 12. I have taken courses in a difficult curriculum and succeeded in these challenges. This program has helped to prepare me for the grueling course of study that I am sure to face and James Cook University and I am ready to face that challenge.
I want to become a dentist because it is the one occupation that has always intrigued me. For whatever reason, teeth, oral hygiene, and how it corresponds to the overall health of one’s body is something that I have always found to be intriguing. It is not common knowledge for the average to teen to know how a tooth abscess can affect the heart or how certain medical conditions can promote plaque, but these are things I seek to learn about, study, and want to be able to help others learn as a part of their oral hygiene routines one day as their dental health provider.
Living in Australia has enabled me to be aware of many types of climates and a wide variety of populations that encompass the continent. Not only are there the urban areas, like Sydney, in which I enjoy living now, but there are many other opportunities available to explore. Living in a region where there are grasslands, rainforests, remote and rural lands, and Indigenous people still remain in this current day make Australia truly unique. As a dentist, I will be able to choses to go and live in one of these areas, serve these people that are underrepresented by the current healthcare system, teach them about their health care needs, and make a difference in their lives.
One of the reasons I want to earn so much more than a basic dentistry education is because when I do go and serve people in a non-urban setting, they will need a great amount of care. Basic education will not be enough to serve their needs in an adequate manner. By receiving a thorough education, I will be able to meet all of their needs and make the greatest possible impact on their lives as far as their oral health is concerned, which is my ultimate goal, will meet my dreams, and fulfill the reasons why I ultimately am choosing to become a dentist.
