- Publicity: Negative publicity is likely to hurt the company’s image according to James S. O’Rourke. Therefore, employees should be given a more private channel to air their grievances to the management which should be done in a professional manner and treated with utmost confidentiality. Employees should be encouraged to communicate rather than take their grievances to the newspapers and social media thus denting the company’s image.
- Job Action: The organisation has been faced with problems for the past 18 months when it comes to recruiting and retaining dependable professionals. This is due to high employee turnover in the company. A company should conduct exit interviews in order to determine the grievances of the exiting employees. The turnover has caused a delay in the organisation’s customer orders thus losing the customers to the competitor.
- Productivity: James S. O’Rourke states that the company is below the recommended standards in the market which has now been the case more than a year. The management and employees should focus on how they should raise the standards of the organisation to match those of the competitors. The organisation should work on employee turnover, unit productivity and absenteeism from work.
- The Right Thing to Do: The organisation should strive to do the right thing. Employees should not expect to be promoted based on gender or race since this will not work well with the core values of the company. Employees should work hard to earn a promotion in the company such as going back to school to get higher credentials.
Given our recent forum that focused on our growing dependence on technology, the best perspective that fits with contemporary American society is the human relations view. This is because we have seen that communication is the most fundamental skill that makes an organisation to run smoothly with minimal operation errors. The following are real examples that managers have to address to the employees in the workplace (Rossides, 2003);
- Emotional deceit where employees manipulate emotions of a weak leader in order to have things done their own way. For example an employee can decide to take a sick leave even when they do not necessarily need it thus affecting the morale of other employees and the productivity of the organisation as a whole.
- The management needs good conflict resolution abilities because unresolved conflicts can make it difficult for teamwork to prevail in an organisation. Unresolved conflicts include jealousy issues, pride, ego, performance discrepancies or generally an employee having a bad day. Poor communication can lead to one’s inability to deal with their emotions in a more diplomatic way.
- Conflicts in employee values, ethics, religion and politics can lead to incompatibility in the work place. Management should ensure that the employees are able to work together and embrace their differences for the good of the company.
Chapter 12 talks about communication as a fundamental skill in the workplace. I intend to use communication skills in my future workplace to work with the diversity of employees in the workplace such as age, gender, and cultural differences in order to avoid any communication barriers that may arise due to these differences. With good and effective communication skills among employees the company will increase on their productivity, operations will run smoothly and errors will decrease significantly.
