There are lots of movies on the screen that are based on historical and religious figure Jesus Christ. Some of the movies are based on biblical narratives; some are completely imaginary and cause a lot of controversy. Towards the end of this month there is another movie about Jesus on the way to be shown in cinemas. To what extent should restrictions apply to allow Jesus to be depicted in movies? Or should Governments completely ban filmmaking about Jesus Christ?
As far as I am concerned, I do not favor this trend. Picturing Jesus on the screen can lead to a wave of idolatry, which I do not support. Idolatry is considered to be the greatest sin in Judeo-Christian religions as well as in Islam. Excessive imaging can distort people’s general conception of religion and alter perceptions of everyday life.
In addition, it is important to know the limits of picturing Jesus on the screen. Movies shall not consist of hidden meaning or ill-considered motives, such as humiliating particular culture, religion or nation. Filmmaking associations shall take into consideration this fact, as religious issue is very sensitive to majority of people.
Nevertheless, I firmly believe that restrictions should not apply in the support of freedom of speech and freedom of opinion. Every filmmaker imagines Jesus in his/her own way, and tries to pass his/her world-view through the creative work, i.e. movie. Putting a ban on depiction of Jesus in movies will violate the basic principles of human rights.
