N&V Consulters is and engineering consultant company that is located in (introduce an address wit in city of location where you lived) it dedicates to develop engineering for different kind of projects specially in the phases of basic and details engineering, it has departments specialized on each of the different fields of engineering, electricity, mechanics, process, instruments, automations, structural and a department dedicated to project planning.
Aaron Paradas is a Senior Electrical engineer that for the past 5 years has been the General Manager of the engineering department of the company, previously to work in N&V Consulters he worked for many years in a very prestigious oil company where he acquire all the experience to develop in he what he know is a well respect manager and engineering assessor. As a manager and advisor the responsibilities that Mr. Paradas has basically are: coordinate the human resources that will be working on each project, structure advice and supervise the execution of the project, manage the monetary resources during the project, guard that the project concludes with the time and money planned and available to do so, communicate with the clients and attend to all the requirements, at last as a well experienced electrical engineer he used to serve as an advisor in the developing of the calculation and drawings that the different engineers develop during each project when it is needed.
The first question was related to what his subordinates expect from and he specified that as the leader of every project the work team expect him to successfully coordinate all the activities needed to develop without delay and extra expenses the project, solving and attending to the requirements off the people working and letting them know what needs to be done and under what parameters, also the electrical engineers look up to him and will also expect him to wide them up front any complication the might confront.
In second place I ask him what the situations that bring him more stress are, to this question he answer without hesitation that dealing with the costumer, the requirements and dealing with their deadlines for the projects were situations that carried more stress given that many times the clients don’t see the implications that some special petitions carry and commutating this in a respectful and concrete way is not an easy task.
As for what he dislikes about his work was that sometimes the owner of the company don’t see at him as a person a human been that gets tired and may be wrong sometimes a normal person at the end that has a lot of responsibilities and if a mistake is done by him its always enhanced and hardly forget, in the contra position he was very enthusiastic in the fact that looking at projects once completed with success given all the effort that putted by him and all the team and knowing that the mayor responsibility was his was what more satisfaction bring to him, also the recognitions as a leader for the rest of the team that look up to him and was grateful for all the help he offer was a good palm in the back for fim.
The left very clear that for him the key different between regular and outstanding managers was the ability to make critical decisions for the best, be able to have a risk managing strategy, great communication skills and also an excellent knowledge off every project that he is put up to, not always knowing all what is needed to develop de project but being sure to form a team that as it will do.
The skills previously described are those that he considered that he needed to have in order to be effective in his job, surely he is not the best on all those area but is his goal to be as good as he could be, the knowledge that he has and applies to every project is being result off many year of work in a endless number of engineering project in which he has seen almost everything and has let him acquire the ability overcome the problems that he confronts, also he has study for years what he names as the art of the manager, basing his studies in the Project Management Institute guidelines.
The mistake that he describe as the worst error that one might incur during a project is the lack of communication with the project team at the begging when he was just starting at the project management position he wasn’t communication enough and also the rest of the team wasn’t communication between them, communication is a key element in a project it can lead to risk analysis and recognition and as so avoid delays and resources lost for example, can enhance the affectivity of the team, given that sometimes a person knows de solution for a problem and he could help to solve it the best way but for that he needs to be informed that the situation exists. The ability of a great team communication was no very good at his beginning and would have been very helpful for him at the moment to overcome in a better way problems that he had.
During the interview that capture more my attention are certain abilities as great communication and motivational skills that a manager must have without noticing Mr. Paradas let me very motivated to continue with my studies at the end of the interview, also is a key elements that skill of looking at the hall picture and at the same time recognize those details that will represent the different between, developing a good or a great project.
