Joining The SWAT Unit Essay Samples

I would wish to be assigned to the SWAT unit at our department, which I consider an elite group of extensively trained professionals who can operate efficiently in high-pressure situations. The SWAT team uses military tactics and equipments, and is deployed in scenarios considered as high-risk for ordinary police. During my 'rookie' year, I remember securing the perimeter for a SWAT assault on a 'meth-lab'; I admired the professionalism used by the team, regardless of the fact that inside the laboratory were armed mercenaries. I believe what impressed me most during this incident is that none of our officers was injured, and only one of the armed criminals was fatally shot.
If I get assigned to this unit, I would wish to regularly work as a negotiator whenever there are hostages involved. I am confident that I possess the communication skills required to fulfill such a mandate; nonetheless, I am willing to work under an experienced negotiator to master this art. Before I became a police officer, I longed to work as a detective in the homicide section; however, after my two years at the department, I wish to be proactively involved in stopping crimes, and not just solving them after they occur.
As a SWAT officer, I look forward to additional training on using advanced weaponry and extensive physical exercise. Arguably, SWAT can be referred to as 'the tip of the spear' in the department, as it deploys into dangerous scenarios, crippling criminals' defenses, and minimizing loss of life. I wish to be part of this 'tip', which will further facilitate my dispensation of the oath I took when I was commissioned as a law enforcement officer.
