The issue of Holocaust has been risen in dozens of works including film industry, literature, art and other aspects of human life. A historical film “The Pianist” reveals deeply epic and dramatic life of Holocaust victims. Life for the Jews becomes worse, the Nazi authorities deprive them of work, they are forced to wear distinctive marks, and that is only the beginning of a tolerant intrusion into the fundamental racial division. The protagonist of the story, a musician Władysław Szpilman, is sent to the Warsaw ghetto. Life in the inhuman conditions dooms people to die of starvation.
Memorial Day devoted to the victims of Holocaust is important not only for preserving the memory of the victims, but also for the future generations, so that they will have an opportunity to receive important lessons and manage to prevent the recurrence of such a tragedy.
Thus, one of the lessons is clear and consists in never being silent. It teaches the humankind that no one has to stay aside, but to be active in problem solving, especially when an issue is of world importance.
Another valuable lesson is that the movement of hatred is unacceptable. The most unifying motivation in mass movements usually concerns finding a common enemy. Hitler knew that using the Jewish people as the perfect image of the devil would unite Germany and reduce the resistance of the surrounding countries that were intended to be occupied. And as a result, Anti-Semitism has become a global system warning that the Pandora's box is about to open and the danger is close to the humanity.
Memorial Day also allows people to honor those who stood up and fought for their rights, those who participated in the movement of the Jewish Resistance, those who risked their own lives to save their nation, and those who liberated the prisoners from the Nazi death camps.
There are many Americans out of this "Greatest Generation" who fought and died for the overthrow of the Nazi regime. Most of them are no longer alive; therefore, their children and grandchildren need to tell the world about what their ancestors have seen. Now there is an anti-Semitic campaign of denigration of the importance of the Holocaust, and even its denial. It is the duty of the whole humankind to remind the world about the sacrifice that was made in order to save the society from the Nazi demon.
Those who deny the Holocaust or understate its value thereby consciously or subconsciously rehabilitate fascism and give a chance to new genocides to happen. The historical significance of the efforts made by Israel and various Jewish organizations in recognizing and commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, lies in the fact that for the first time in human history, an act of mass ethnocide, of premeditated murder of man by man has been convicted and found unacceptable all around the world.
The Holocaust, the World Wars and other great terrors that happened to the humankind make people think about the things to do in order to avoid those terrors on the future. Everyone should bear in mind that the world peace is the prior aim of every nation. It is important to respect other cultures and treat them equally, as unfair attitude to other nations results in various discrimination issues that may cause global problems for the whole society. Despite of this, the world suffers much from terrorism now, and it is quite difficult to speak of peace that is far to achieve. Still, every person has to consciously analyze nowadays situation in the world and not to forget about the history that has given the world a chance to exist today. Remembering the Holocaust is a painful experience, but it is important to ensure that this will never happen again.
