This statement is in response to the latest email I received from the dean of Fulton school of engineering. The letter accuses me of engaging in examination malpractices. The Dean claims that, according to the academic integrity rules EGR 217, I am guilty of cheating. Going into deeper detail, he claims that I cheated in question number 9 through the use of a mobile phone. This claim has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. I am a student who values honesty and integrity, and as such, I would never even think of committing such an act. I have been raised in a morally upright background and cannot stress how much my parents insisted on such virtues.
First, I can confidently say that there is no proof whatsoever that I actually used my mobile phone. Looking at the logical aspect of this allegation, it seems out of place. While taking the paper, I was seated in the front row in full view of the invigilator. It would be rather risky to attempt using my phone at such a position because I would get detected within no time. I kept my phone safe and sound in my backpack and never touched it at all during the entire duration of the exam. Not for a second did I ever pull it out. The exam supervisor was seated a few feet away and can bear me witness. Therefore, I find this claim extremely outrageous and unjust.
Another claim put forward by the Dean is that during the final exam I also cheated. This time, the accusation states that while I visited the bathroom, I was referring to material that would assist me in the examination. This accusation is also false. As I had stated before, my phone was in my backpack during the entire examination. To add on to that, I only spent five minutes in the bathroom contrary to what the Dean claims – that I stayed a whole twenty minutes in the bathroom. When I got summoned to the dean’s office, he spoke to me for five minutes. During this period, he never gave me any time to respond or even to explain myself. All he did was to bombard me with accusation upon accusation. I never got a chance to even utter a single word. He claims that I now deserve to get grade “E” since I had cheated both within the semester and final exam as well.
On the issue of visiting the washroom during exam time, I believe every student has a right to visit the bathroom whenever they need to go for a call. In fact, my current medical condition also necessitates frequent bathroom visits. I have recurrent hemorrhoids that began years ago. I have as well undergone a couple of surgeries for pilonidal cysts. Ten days prior to the exam, I had a bout of the disease that put me down. For this reason, I missed the calculus 3 paper. I even contacted the lecturer and explained to him the reasons why I missed the test.
As my condition was getting out of hand, I had to make a visit to Temple St Luke’s Medical. Dr. Hess, Brian, an ED did some tests on me and diagnosed that I indeed had Pilonidal cysts. These are abnormal pockets in the skin that contain skin and hair debris. They occur when hair grows inwards puncturing the skin and embeds itself. When the cyst gets infected, it results in an extremely painful abscess.
Further examinations by Dr. Dewinter found that I also had internal hemorrhoids and allergic Rhinitis. The doctors recommended that I undertake immediate surgery due to the seriousness of the condition. However, I declined to undertake it because of the impending final exam. In fact, the physician gave me a medical note that required me to take a rest from 21st April. Attached to this letter are the medical notes that the physicians gave me that I believe will provide contrite evidence to the extent of my frequent washroom visits, and hence my innocence.
