The Canadian workforce has experienced significant positive changes since the introduction of workers unions under the industrial relations (IR) movement. Unions are defined as employees' associations formed with the objective of enhancing their powers to deal with employers. Unions have a primary function of handling grievances and collective bargaining, but they also perform other important functions for the benefit of both the employee and the employer. Unions work under the rules and regulations of industrial relations, which define various rates of union membership. The study of employees’ unions in the Canadian workforce has played a significant role in understanding different aspects of industrial relations. The important features of employees unions learned include; the significance of work, theories of industrial relations, the environment and management that influence industrial relations, and labor force trends in Canada.
The introduction of industrial relations in countries such as Canada and the United States served as a means of improving employer-employee relationships. Under the IR, workers unions generated that served as one of the approaches employed by labor relations stakeholders to promote the positive working environment. Unions were introduced in Canada in early 19th century, and they have continues to play big roles in the employment sector as more workers join these unions. The establishment of workers unions in Canada did not face many challenges. Back in the 18th century before to the industrial revolution, workers used strikes and other methods to express their grievances. The Canadian workforce rarely used these tactics. Despite many challenges affecting functions of unions brought about by political, social, and economic factors, Canadian unions continue to grow through the creation of effective policies and rules to protect unions.
Employees unions are good for Canadian workforce because they make workers enjoy more benefits that those operating without unions. First, they practice collective bargaining where employees are assured of job and wage security. Second, unions promote joint union-management ventures at the workplace that aim at increasing morale and productivity of the employee. Third, employees enjoy joint participation away from the workplace that plays a role in increasing their relationship with other employees and the management and understanding their environment better. Finally, unions promote equal representation of minorities in the workplace; hence, women, people with disabilities and youths get employment opportunities in the public sector.
Collective bargaining acts as one of the major benefits of employees unions in the Canadian workforce. Conditions of unionized workers are determined under collective bargaining; hence, leading to the development of rights terms of employment between the employer and the employee. Collective bargaining creates a difference between unionized and non-unionized employees. Canadian workforce working in the public sector faced major challenges especially when it came to addressing their grievances before the introduction of workers unions. The issue led to many people opting for employment in the private sector. However, unions brought a light of joy to workers in Canada because of the presence of collective bargaining. Currently, the public sector holds the biggest population of the Canadian workforce. Collective bargaining addresses issues such as working hours, job control, hiring process, and workforce reductions.
On the other hand, the Canadian workforce benefits from unions by giving employees an opportunity to manage individual employment contract through employment legislations. Non-unionized workforces have little or no say when it comes to developing employment contracts. On the contrary, unionized workers' employee contracts follow terms and conditions that protect the employee from any form of maltreatment from the employer, and immediate termination of the contract for no valid reason.
Canada has seen its workforce grow steadily because most employment sectors accept work unions. The nature of the Canadian workforce acts as a lesson for other countries to introduce legislations that protect employees to achieve industrial growth.
