Globalization – is a complex social process that has all-pervasive nature and that changes the world we live in. We are talking about globalization, implying changes in society, modern lifestyle and intensification of all processes.
Globalization changes the whole system of social relations, including labour relations as part of them. System of values and interests of social development, system of interests and values at the workplace changes in a qualitatively different manner. Workers see each other not as competitors with hostile intentions, but as peace partners. The labour market due to globalization became not a constant race for a leader, but a system of equivalent and equal elements.
Such structural changes in the economy as a reduction in the number of people employed in manufacturing industries and the corresponding increase in the services sector, as a result of globalization, led to another trend – increase of the share of skilled workers. Perception of this alteration at the labour market caused the people strive for higher education in many countries on the Globe.
Another significant change brought by globalization to labour relations is consideration of knowledge as a source of value creation. Before globalization, the cost of the product was determined with the amount of the work allocated to making a final product. Today, with a huge service industry all over the world, knowledge of the workers plays not the least role in the final price of any product. As a consequence – the emergence at the labour market employees of brain labour.
Finally, the last but not less important feature of labour at the age of globalization is the tendency of shifting labour more into art. What was once exclusively the way of making money, for some categories of workers it became a form of self-expression. A man started expecting from the profession a possibility of realization of his personal potential, and, hence, – declining interest in traditional forms of industrial labour, perceived as standard, monotonous, tedious and not creative.
All of the above changes in labour relations have significant consequences. Globalization processes in society have a positive impact on certain professions and specialties expanding the scope of the work and presenting persons employed with new challenges. However, there is no denying that globalization bears negative effects on labour relations. For example, many workers simply lose their jobs due to lack of need for their occupation.
