Arguably, relationships can be said to be part of crucial aspects of life. A relationship is seen as a bond between two people. “Interpersonal relationship” is a terminology that is used to refer to a link or rather a connection between two or more individuals that may be brief or lasting. This connection may be based either on business interactions, solidarity, love or other forms of commitments, (Diana, 2000, pp. 5-7). Notably, interpersonal relationships may arise in the milieu of cultural, social, and other influences. In some cases, interpersonal relationships may either be regulated by custom, law, or mutual agreements. Most importantly, these kinds of relationships are the foundations of social groups as well as the entire society in general. There are a number of reasons why people should engage in lasting interpersonal relationships.
To begin with enduring interpersonal relationships becomes very vital when it comes to solving problems and resolving conflicts. In this case, it is only possible for the concerned parties to communicate freely with one another in the process of finding solutions to problems, if they have good and lasting interpersonal relations. Resolving conflicts is also easier because engaging in a discussion will not be a big deal, (Diana, 2000, pp. 12-15). Another important point is that lasting interpersonal relationships is very crucial when it comes to diversity issues, more especially at the work place. Unquestionably, currently most of the working environments are characterized by different individuals from various places with varying cultures. It is only when people are in a position to relate positively with one another that they will be able to prosper in a work environment with different categories of people. Lastly, in general terms, lasting interpersonal relationship plays an important role in meeting peoples’ needs. It has been noted that needs influences peoples’ attitudes, opinions, and viewpoints. There is a direct correlation between our needs and relationships. As such, in order to meet most of our needs, lasting interpersonal relationship is inevitable.
In conclusion, as mentioned above interpersonal relationship is a link of two or more individuals or groups. Lasting interpersonal relationships plays important role in solving problems and conflicts as well as meeting our pressing needs. Hence, there is need to promote lasting interpersonal relationships.
