If you could change 1 Law
If I could change a single law, it would be the legalization of marijuana in California. This State of California law allows the use of marijuana in the state. The process of changing this law would be involving.
I would work with the state legislator to facilitate the process of changing it. The state legislator would be the governor and I will seek support from the parliamentarians of the state legislature of California.
I would want to change this law because of the dangers it poses to the society. Legalization of marijuana will affect both the young people and the old in the state. The legalization of marijuana in California will increase the addiction levels to the drug. Increased addiction will in turn increase the levels of the adverse effects of the drug such as increased social crimes because marijuana reduces inhibitions.
The legalization of marijuana in California will affect the education systems by making it readily available to the teens and students. Thus, because of peer influence and curiosity, most of the teens and students would spend most of their time on abusing the drug, especially because of addiction. Continual use of marijuana causes deviations in objectives leading to deteriorations in academic performance of the students.
Cully Stimson wrote an article that presented the harmful effects of legalizing marijuana in Colorado as reported by the Rocky Mountain Hugh Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. According to the report, many of the drug arrests involved marijuana with 25 to 40 percent being marijuana alone. Additionally, student suspensions and expulsions related to drugs increased to 32% starting from the school years 2008-09 to 2012-13 with the majority being for violations of marijuana. Lastly, there was an 82% increase in hospitalizations related to the use of marijuana from 2008 (Stimson 28).
