In regards to the father and son and their commitment to Islam is that the father is entirely committed to Islam, but the son is not. This has resulted into them not being too close to each other despite being related as father and son. For example, at the beginning of the movie when his father goes to pray the son does not show any sign of interest or concern.
At the beginning of their pilgrimage to Mecca, the father and the son relationship is not good, and it is evident when they start their journey the son barely speaks to his father, and they are all quiet until the father sleeps in the car. As they continue with their pilgrimage they start getting closer to one another and through experiencing various challenges during the pilgrimage. The son learns a lot of lessons and ways of Islam through his father and towards the end of the movie they become closer and it is evident when the son frantically searches for his father when he suspects he is missing.
The father expresses religion through various ways which are all evident throughout the movie. He prays, reads the Quran, and puts into practice the teachings of Islam into his daily life, for example, helping others, forgiveness and good morals. Plus towards the end of the movie he teaches his son about the importance of Hajj and Mecca.
Reda goes through an evolution in understanding Islam. At the beginning of the movie Reda doesn't seem to know the fundamentals of Islam, but during their pilgrimage, he learns a lot from his father. Towards the end, Reda can be seen helping a beggar, and this is a lesson he learned from his father when he helped the widow on their way to Mecca. Reda’s lack of understanding of Islam can be due to him being brought up in a European country where Islam is not everywhere plus his parents might not have brought him up with proper teachings of Islam from an early age.
Hajj had a tremendous impact on Reda and his understanding and belief in Islam. He learned a lot of lessons about Islam from his father on their way to Mecca. He was able to learn the fundamentals including practice and importance of Islam. Reda will return to France a changed man despite losing His beloved father in Mecca. Hajj changed his life in the understanding and belief in Islam. Towards the end of the movie, Reda is seen washing the body of his dead father which is an Islamic practice. In the end, he goes to board a taxi, but he hesitates to go and offer some money to a beggar, and this is a clear sign he is a changed man as he returns to France.
Within a secular or western context, it is tough to maintain some form of Islamic identity. Challenges range from discrimination to lack of proper facilities such as mosques. In a secular context, there are many things also which goes against Islamic teachings and laws, and this makes it difficult for Muslims to thrive in such environments. For example, in regards to morals and daily life Muslims are supposed to adhere to teachings of the Quran but what happens in the secular world is contrary to Islamic teachings which Muslims are advised to refrain from any behavior or actions which go against Islamic teachings and laws.
