Introduction
Leadership is one of the essential characteristics that determine the successful performance of an organization. Good leadership reflects in production and the employees; hence, developing the image of the company. In any organizations, there must be effective leaders, who can make things work effectively in order to accomplish the set goals of the organization (Martin, 2009). Leaders usually manage to apply their acquired knowledge and skills for effective working. However, their behavior also influences their leadership skills and principles leading to either poor or good management (Ledlow & Coppola, 2011). Leadership is as a process where a person practices his authority and influence over others to complete a given task. It helps towards achieving a given set goal of the organization. It is an aspect of influencing others to finish a given mission, and an inspiration of other individuals to accomplish a vision within an organization in a shared effort and success.
In a hospital scenario; for instance, the organization should have powerful management in order to let things work the right way. For example, there is a hospital where most of the nurses just sit and take longer to attend to the patients. They are always complaining about the workload, and they seem not to have satisfactory at job; therefore, they are reluctant even in the way they exercise their health care services. The workers do not work collaboratively with others, and in fact, some when called upon do not want to go and share, so they leave most of the nurses stranded. The manager does not appear at the place of work, and when he appears, he always comes with new rules without bothering to consult other employees. Therefore, they feel so unappreciated, and that is why they do not work as part of the organization (Ledlow & Coppola, 2011).
According to the above scenario, it is clear that there are poor management and leadership. In this case, a good leader should have some qualities that are effective in the performance of the organization, and should motivate the workers. According to DuBrin (2011), a good leader should have the following skills. However, the ability to be good leaders depends on various skills, which deal with individuals. Leaders vary, and every leader has his strategies of leading others. A leader should have thinking skills because most of the leaders meet with difficult situations that need the instant solution; therefore, this involves a leader to be a creative thinker. Thorough thinking he will make an effective decision-making (Ledlow & Coppola, 2011).
Power and influence theory
This process is one of the leadership theories that are very effective in the management and leadership in the organization. According to this theory, power influences behavior; one can employ the power and authority through various leadership styles like authoritative or democratic. His power through various styles, influences the behavior of the employees to work in a way that is to the benefit of the company (Martin, 2009). He can involve punishment and rewarding good behavior to reduce the weaknesses and misbehavior among the employees. Power can be applied in their categories. It can be coercive, rewarding or legitimate. In addition, there is personal power, which is charming and appealing. It is the most influential power a leader can apply in the above scenario since it creates an interpersonal relationship between a leader and the employees. It also inspires and motivates them to work hard as they feel to be important. Through power and influence, a leader can use tactful skill, which influence and modify the behavior of workers like explained (Martin, 2009).
Problem -solving skills
A leader should have problem-solving skills, which are unique and admirable. In very organization, there must be issues arising from here and there; hence, calling for a solution. Good leaders should make use of such problems as opportunities, which help him come up with an effective solution that can be applied in other areas of experience (Martin, 2009).
Organizational skills
Leaders should be well organized in such a way that things are done and planned to start with the one that has more urgency. He should plan all things according to the priority and the need. Moreover, good leaders should be able to manage time effectively without wasting any time. All things should be done, and duties allocated to the employees accordingly so that by the end of a given period, the long -term and short-term goals are accomplished (Martin, 2009).
Self-motivation
A good leader is self- motivated in such a way that others can learn from him. He should have a vision that inspires and motivates others to work hard towards the set goal. He should also be able to motivate workers through reinforcements, encouragements, promotions, giving tips among others. Motivation encourages others to work with a heart towards accomplishing the set goals and objectives of the company (Martin, 2009).
Communication skills
A good leader needs to be a good communicator and listener, and he can listen effectively make use of the information through questioning. He should have a good rapport, which is effective to develop a strong interpersonal relationship with others. The boss needs to be a good public speaker so that when called upon to present a report concerning the organization, he has the confidence to speak in public. Apart from public speaking, the leaders who possess good communication skills can talk and lead a meeting effectively so that he can reach the winning point. They can as well handle the difficult situations that need an argument to either win or lose (Ledlow & Coppola, 2011).
Team working
Good leaders should work with others since this helps in sharing opinions and changing assumptions about an individual. Team working motivates workers emulate the style of working collaboratively. Team working helps in creating and developing skills from others. The sharing skills is important in an organization since people are not always perfect in all areas (DuBrin, 2011).
Conclusion
A good leader should be a great thinker in decision making so that he can make a decision that he would not regret later. In addition, a good leader has to be very organized in that all the work is done according to priority. Communications, as well as problem- solving skills, are vital skills, without those skills affect the effective working of the employees and the performance of the company. Leaders should be hardworking, determined, motivated and lead by example so that their employees can learn and emulate from them. Furthermore, personal life should not interfere with work such as emotional stress since it affects negatively the performance of the workers. Leaders should be well organized in such a way that things are done and planned to start with the one that has more urgency.
