Leadership, as most people would like to think, is not all cozy or rather a roller coaster ride. There is more to it than just holding a title and leading followers. Leaders are expected to be servants and serve people whole-heartedly (Spence p.20). They are supposed to lead by example and not just dictating. This paper, therefore, will focus on leadership and particularly servant leadership.
“IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR” is a Christmas hymn written by Edmund Sears, a preacher of Unitarian Church at Wayland in Massachusetts. It was drafted in time of unrest from European revolution to the war between United States of America and Mexico ("It Came upon the Midnight Clear" p.1). Based on this information, the song, a Christmas Carol, has a meaning which is to urge people to embrace peace and alongside the Christmas message which is love rather than conflict which he terms as “sin and strife.”
Servant leadership is based on leaders putting followers’ needs first and theirs later (Perry p.11). Such leaders include Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Junior and Dr. Martin Luther King (Neethling, Stander and Rutherford p.28). These leaders style of leadership has had several impacts. First, the approach enabled them to earn trust from supporters as well as getting more followers and work done.
Secondly, their leadership led their countries to independence or laid a foundation for freedom. Additionally through their leadership, people earned their rights though not in the short term as the poor got needed help (Spence p. 46). However at some point, their leadership was their weakness leading to rejection by leaders with different approaches to leadership.
I, however, would appreciate if my family, friends, and co-workers remembered my works as one of the best works that made a difference in someone’s life, gave motivation to those giving up, earned someone rights or made the world a better place for someone that was hopeless.
In summary, you are your leader use that opportunity well because now is the only time you the next moment might be an imagination or a memory. Make a difference today and now.
