Sally Helgensen uses an authentic style of leadership. This is leadership where stakeholders in an organization are given chances to air their views and are listed at all the times. This kind of style does emphasize on the employees need as a priority followed by financial need for the company. This is expressed in the case of sally when she was preparing speeches for the CEO of the fortune 500 companies where she involved herself in office politics but sees herself as an outsider looking at an concedes herself an observer.
Sally interviews as a writer helped her learn how the society treated women at work place. She learned how women skills and knowledge were advantageous to the changing organizations. She noticed the way certain CEOs did not value the women's perspectives and they way their companies would have benefited had they listened to them. Different companies do have different styles of leadership to govern the complex running activities. Jim uses delegative style to run his company. It involves the management picking a few individuals to serve in certain areas of the company. The management studies the employee to know their specific areas of interests and productivity before assigning them responsibilities.
Delegative style enables the employers get an easy time in the running of the companies’ activities. The employer is able to know his or her employees at personal and close levels. Jim is able to know his employees on a personal level and thus help him deliver better services to the people and as seen, Jim receives a high rating when it comes to the assessment of his company and it can be noted that services have improved after he was appointed to head the company.
The style enables the employer to do other duties rather than supervise employees. The company's activities are entrusted to able and mature employees who can make the right decisions and employees who do enjoy their work and need no supervision of the management hence being productive. Employees are recognized by their good work and hence increased job benefits as in the case of Patti who enjoys additional work for recognition.
The style does allow the employees to be their own bosses as seen Ted and Jena are good at handling public relationship issues which Jim is not good at hence they do feel a sense of prestige in their work and freedom while working with their capabilities enables them to do good work for their clients without Jim being there. Based on the story of Dr Cooke, identify the dominant style of leadership and justify your answer.
Dr. Cooke is seen to apply situational style of leadership to address his problems. Everyone has a preferred or a dominant leadership style but due to the larger society and variability, it is the way we come to apply the style that matters. Style applied should be accommodating. Dr. Cooke had a schedule where people would wake up at 4.30 am and go to the site; most of the students could not make it to be up by 5 am; and most showed signs of fatigue by the end of the first week.
Leadership improves when individuals are aware of the continuing activity. Dr. Cooke is aware that the students come from different backgrounds, customs, cultures, religion and with different skills from which he himself learns from them. He claims that this takes time for the students to fit in and the need for limited resources to finish the excavation.
Good leadership is the one that realizes the best fit in between the people and no dictatorship. There is good communication between the management and the students. Dr. Cooke conveys a meeting between the students and himself to assess the progress and to get views from the students and the students use the chance to express themselves.
Good leadership inspires. Dr. Cooke talks to students on the post excavation and explains to them on how the success of the expedition relied on them. He tells them that they were in charge of drawing a schedule of their assignments and as to how the tasks were to be carried. After the meeting, he noted that the students were happy .There was a change in their mood; there were less sickness and everyone was ready to go to work at 5 am.
