Assignment 2: Loads of Fun
The paper analyses the case of Taira (Salmon) Brandt who is about to take over the family business of party invitation named “Loads of Fun”. Taira is known as the boss’ daughter and is not very much involved in taking big decisions for the business. The company is aware of the business decision that will be taken by the new CEO, but she is surely looking forward to addressing certain aspects that can have an impact on the business.
Taira is about to face new challenges because of an article published in the Kent County Gazette that challenged the company to get aligned with the green side. The paper evaluates the role of new CEO in the business, her plans for the future, and the leadership skill that are required to accomplish the business goals. It is expected that Taira will face leadership relationship building challenges. Therefore, identification of the challenges and steps taken by her to assess the environment for change will also be discussed in the paper.
Taira Brandt is the daughter of Garret Salmon and has worked in some capacity within the firm. Garret Salmon has never emphasized her to take a more commanding role as she was married but after her divorce, Garret Salmon intends her to take charge of the company. Taira has recently received a degree in Business Management.
Taira has never taken the responsibility to take a lead and has the behavior of doing some part of the work by the instructions of her father. The decision of the Garret Salmon is not announced, and Taira is only known as the daughter of the boss. She does not have any specific leadership skills, and that is the main reason that Garret Salmon has decided to give her the responsibilities after two month time.
Taira realizes that she needs to change her approach, behavior, and attitude for work. She currently has a behavior of doing anything as instructed. She emphasizes to take the responsibility and cut out work for her to prove herself as a good leader. She currently takes the stock of the company, and she also evaluates the current market and business performance. She found that the firm is not able to increase the profits for the last two years, and the costs of business are growing.
Taira intends to explore the opportunities for business growth in future. She wants to identify the opportunity to sell their products directly to the customers and also to examine the possibility of sell online. Online sources are the most effective ways of selling products, and therefore, Taira thinks it would be beneficial for Loads of Fun to search for new ways to sell its products. She also figures to revamp the current marketing plans and business image.
Taira thinks that the revamp would enable the business to introduce new and efficient means of growth in the global market. The role of Garret Salmon is also an issue in the mind of Taira, and she is seeking help to identify the role of his father after taking over the business operations. Her father is happy either with taking a retirement or continuing to do some work within the company.
Taira is a person that finds herself comfortable in doing any job but as the CEO of the company she has to adopt some behavioral changes. Individuals in the company also gossip about her, and she knows the point. She believes that she can make changes in her personal attitude but also considers that the employees have a significant impact on the company.
Taira needs to match the skills of her father to tackle the employees and management. Firstly, she requires her self-assessment to determine her personal capabilities and weaknesses (Rothstein & Burke, 2010). Sharp perceptions also matter in the current business world since leaders have to notice/oversee the work of others. Taira needs to build responsiveness, and it can be attained by continuously communicating with the employees and the management (Ruck, 2015).
Taira is known with the business and its operations and therefore, knowing the organization is not a big issue. She must concentrate to develop internal communication infrastructure, motivating the employees, building teams, and organize the goals by the objectives, vision, and mission of the business (Ruck, 2015; Lauby, 2005). All these traits would help her to become a more successful and active leader in future.
The biggest challenge faced by Taira is that she has not yet actively taken part in the decision-making processes. She can complete the work which is assigned to her, but none of her work reflects the role a leadership. As she has never been in a position as a leader, therefore, there exist a risk of good leadership qualities. Moreover, the current works that are assigned to her need to be taken care of by someone else if she wants to become a good leader and lead the company to success.
Furthermore, there is an opportunity to go into a joint venture and establish a web store to cater Asian market. Taira has no understanding of the Asian culture. Therefore, it will be a sole decision of Taira to enter into this new venture or not. It is noted that entry into the Asian market is a good opportunity for the business, but the lack of understanding of the culture can also lead to failure.
Another challenge that the new CEO of Loads of Fun will face is that of environmental issues. The environmental issue is raised in the County’s Gazette. Therefore, actions must be taken by the company to overcome it, or it can face consequences in the future. In addition to it, she also faces a challenge of changing the current working style of the company because she believes that the employees have given up on them and are just working with the flow. Hence, she wants to make big changes in the working style of the company and also align her father’s knowledge and enthusiasm.
Taira needs to deal carefully with the environmental challenges faced by the company. As Kent County Gazette has published a report, therefore, an action must be taken by the company to solve this issue. As paper is an essential source of the company and the company cannot operate without using it for its products. Hence, the new CEO of the company must take some step for their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). There are several ways to contribute to the society and reduce their impact on the environment .
It can be concluded that the new CEO has no experience of leadership and lacks efficiency which can create a problem for the company. There will be tremendous pressure on Taira to prove that she is capable of taking the senior management position in the company. For this purpose, she needs to deal with the strategy of the company in an effective manner and make decision that could help the company improve its business position. She needs to develop an understanding of different markets so that she can expand the business.
