Computer Networks
Discuss the advantages of a database management approach to the file processing approach? Give examples to illustrate your answer.
A database is organized interconnected data which can be queried with a complex question and provide an answer. A school database can have data on semesters, program, subjects, students, gender, country, grades, etc. A query from an airline can be: In the last 5 semesters, who were the female French students in the Tourism degree program who averaged 80% in their subjects? There would be a list produced by the database system.
Benefits
Easy to visualize being designed as a table with rows as records and columns as keys
Data is retrievable using normal-looking questions called SQL queries
Convertible among different database products such as an MS Excel spread sheet to an Oracle database
Limitations
Requires more computer resources for complex queries
Database design can be easy but also prone to poor design
Connectivity between databases can be difficult
How will wireless information appliances and services affect the business use of the Internet and the Web? Explain.
People can access information wherever there is an internet signal connection. Business can move faster as more information can allow services or products to be distributed faster. People can use these data sent to and from their devices to sell, deliver products, provide services and transact payments. Consequently, broadband capacity of the internet will continue to grow.
What are some of the business benefits and management challenges of the following:
They allow computers to work together by having a main computer doing most of the work but parts of the application system are run by client computers resulting in faster processing overall. The server remains as the main processor and if it gets attacked by hackers, the whole system will become unavailable.
Network computing
It allows sharing of data among many computers by transmission or access through an application. This capability creates increasing demand for network speed which management has to both regulate and provide for.
Peer-to-peer networks
Networked computers connect to each other as equals where no computer is controlling or dependent on others. The total work load of the network is balanced among the member clients so no computer suffers slowdowns. This network carries the most risk in performance and safety.
Wireless Radiation
What does the World Health Organization have to say about microwave or non-ionizing radiation?
The WHO still maintains that there are still no adverse health effects from the non-ionizing radio frequency signals from mobile phones but it has classified it as a 2B carcinogen, meaning that there is a possibility. It states that so far, there is limited evidence of the link. (“Microwaves”)
What are the various complaints regarding cell phone towers?
There was study showing a higher rate of leukemia among children that live near towers. Other people also have complained of symptoms that are indicative of vibroacoustic disease such as “mood swings, indigestion, ulcers and joint pain.” (“What are the Dangers”)
