Syl Tang definitely is in a tough position being a manager in this very situation that happened between Bob and Daniel. On the one hand, she is trying to finish the project on time to satisfy the clients, and on the other hand she has to organize the work of the employees in a way which everyone would find acceptable. However, Daniel is feeling anything but comfortable in this situation. And it is hard not to agree with him.
I do not think Syl showed her best managerial qualities in the argument. She allowed Bob to come up with a suggestion, but in fact his suggestion was rather selfish - to exclude Daniel from the team and to replace his with other people. I do not think Syl performed her best in this case. It is clearly a discriminating thing to exclude Daniel just because Bob wants it so. If Bob does not want to work with Daniel, then he is the one who should be excluded. Daniel feels offended and he has a right to feel this way. Not only dies Bob discriminate him because of his sexual orientation - he goes even further by hindering Daniel to do his job.
If I were in Syl's position, I would make Bob choose whether to stay in the project or not. But I would definitely not exclude Daniel. If Bob is the one who does not want to cooperate, why leave him? Next time he will find something to say about other colleagues, and what will Syl do? Exclude everyone but keep Bob? I think he has issues, and he is the one who should do something about them. Syl could have advised him to have some counselling instead of closing the meeting because Daniel got too frustrated. He had a right to feel that way. I think Syl did not show good managerial techniques in this situation.
