A public space refers to a social space that is accessible and open to all the people. Public space involves the roads which include the pavements, the parks, the beaches and public squares. Furthermore, government's buildings such as libraries are also considered public spaces although these places are considered to contained restricted information that bars the public from going to such places. The uses of such places are considered to have greater limits from the government side. Additionally, a public space refers to the central hub of the globe that connects people's movements, ideas, and expertise. It is the place where people share a passion for creating vital information and ideas. The issue of globalization has affected the public places. It is, therefore, important for a country to consider this issue whenever it is developing a public place. Furthermore, whenever a public space is being constructed, it is important for a country to consider such aspects as a culture, religious backgrounds, and beliefs of the people who will be affected by the public space in one way or another. Therefore, the paper tries to explain the issue of globalization and the inner City: Tensions and Solutions to Issues of Race and Class.
Globalization is the forum for the future of various cities. Globalization is an important issue that affects the way people interact in the society. Collaboration between the UN and Axson Johnson Foundation argues that globalization and technology have provided a platform for rural communities to convert their good ideas into the reality in the country. Globalization and technology have been considered in supporting and activating public spaces in the U.S cities through the community program known as the Heart of the Community program. Public space has resulted into a touching story for the significant theory that relates to the geography and philosophy of urban development. Furthermore, public space has been encouraged through other courses such as the socials studies, cultural studies, and urban design. In the current world, public space has been considered to involve such aspects as the gathering places, and this is considered a larger aspect of the social space (Mitchell 23). There are requirements for public spaces which include the fees payments for entry or tickets. Moreover, there are privately owned public spaces which include the Non-government-owned malls. These spaces have features that bind and distinguish them from the public places. The fees paid in such places are higher than that paid in the public spaces, and they are paid to people who owned the space. Public spaces are important because they are used for social gatherings and performing government ceremonies and other activities of the state. Public space has also been considered a good place because it acts as a site for democracy. Many people who have been advocating for freedom and democracy in the past have been utilizing the public spaces. It is through the public spaces that these agitators connect with the public and provide them with the grievances and issues they are agitating for. Public space is considered a place where democracy becomes possible. Don Mitchell, who is a geographer, has been extensively writing on the topic of public space in connection with the democracy.
Accordingly, public space has been considered to be a mirror of the complexities of urban society. It is argued that public space has been defined to include the collections of individuals that are construed in the social fabric of the city. It is also a part of the fragmented and impersonal urban environments. Making of urban public space has assisted in overcoming the fragmentation of urban environments such that through the inclusive processes, accessible spaces have been created.
Currently, in the international development, economic and racial aspects of lives are tied up. Ideally, the races are becoming institutionalized with the periods and as the ethnic divisions and tension have continued to be the significant face of the human and social relations. It is believed that the construction of public space has led to a reduction in the racial differences. Arguably, timely construction of the public spaces has improved the racial and ethnic relations in the cities. For the United States, the issue of ethnic and race are important for the construction of public space. This is because the increasing ethnic and racial diversity has continuously widened the economic and social divisions. Globally, the issue has been remedied through the construction of public spaces. Racism has been used by various people to undermine the growth of cities where they live (Mitchell 27). It has, however, been reported that it is no longer an issue in several societies because of the construction of social spaces. Spaces that have been created for public gatherings have solved the issue since people can gather and discuss important issues affecting their lives. What is more, many countries have embraced globalization and technology whenever they are creating their public spaces.
One of the most important aspects that need to be taken into consideration when constructing a public space is the cultural diversity of the target people who will use the space. If a city, for example, is aiming at building a shade that will be used as a public space, it is important for the city administration to take into consideration the culture of the people in that city (Willium 34). Through, the technological advancement, a city can estimate the number of tribes who live in a particular city. Furthermore, technology is also significant as it can be used to estimate the cultural diversity of the city. Globalization in relation to public space has played a key role in the divisive race relations. Therefore, the state of race and ethnic grounds is believed to affect the efficiency and effectiveness of the public space.
Globalization has evolved to be significant in public space construction. One of the significance of globalization is increasing the international competitive pressures that have led to the improvement in the public spaces that are constructed by the different countries. Fiscal policies are also important when it comes to public space construction.
Public spaces are constructed based on the agendas of the city and the policies that are set by the governments of the day. It is believed that public spaces are created based on the current situation of the society and the society, in turn, is driven by the globalization and technological advancements. Modern public spaces are built with the technological advancement in the mind. For example, unlike before some of the public spaces such as arboretums have been fitted with the television screens where individuals can view their favorite programs as they relax in such places. Furthermore, such spaces have been fitted with CCTV cameras, and any incidences of crime can easily be nabbed, and the perpetrators of the crime can be dealt with accordingly (Elijah 19).
The inner cities have witnessed globalization as the primary driver of the economy of such a particular city. Politics, social and cultural factors have been utilized by many countries to address the problem of ethnic and racial discrimination (Amster 33). The state of ethnic division in a city is relevant to the globalization. Accordingly, globalization is attributed to the increased ethnic and racial problems. Domestic economies of the cities depend largely on the globalization and technological advancements.
Furthermore, it is also important for the country to consider its economic status whenever it aspires to construct a public space. Through this, the country will be in a position to equip and retain the workers effectively and efficiently. If for example, there is loss of jobs among the workers in the public space, the country can make some follow-ups through the technological application, and this becomes part of the rationale for building and retaining a high-class public space that gathers for the cultural and social aspects of all the users of space (Tridib 47). For example, if a country is making a public space that will be used by the motorists, then it would be of great importance for such a state to consider all the aspects concerning the culture of the motorists. Comparative investigation of the global public spaces is also considered part and parcel of good public spaces in the country. An opinion is to incorporate all the factors that will make the public space beneficial to all the users regardless of their social and cultural differences and reduce the racial and ethnic divisions.
