During the 1950s, communism is one of the great issues that many politicians are providing their views about it. Joseph McCarthy, one of the Republican Senators, has accused the hundreds of members of U.S. Department of State personnel as members of communist party. This proclamation came from his suspicion without having a concrete evidence against these individuals. From then on, the act of accusing without proper evidence has been named McCarthyism. This terminology was used many times on different political issues and situations in the United States. One of which was the senate hearings and investigation against Hollywood celebrities who were also accused of being members of communist party.
Although McCarthyism was associated with negative impression in relation to false accusations, it still has historical significance. McCarthyism is related to the Red Scare, which in definition, a term given to a period when the Americans were afraid of the influence of the communist. Thus, the McCarthyism itself was also viewed as the 2nd Red Scare. In fact, former Senator McCarthy was allegedly using the Americans’ fear of communism for his personal gain. During this period, many Americans were afraid that communist or the Soviet Union was already infiltrating the U.S. Government in order to take over the country. This perception was developed due to the actions made by Senator McCarthy or the McCarthyism itself.
There was a military outrage that McCarthyism has created, to which former President Eisenhower was accused of treason. These actions made McCarthy’s popularity dropped until he died three years after his various accusations due to liver cirrhosis. His death was viewed by many Americans as the end of a national nightmare or the end of McCarthyism.
