Training of cultural diversity could eliminate many harmful incidents. However, some people including Students Against Racism favored diversity while others including American Student Organization were opposing diversity and they started protesting against each other.
A protest started on Campus on Friday. Over 600 demonstrators came during the Board of Regents meeting that was discussing different things including a plan for cultural diversity training for students as well as faculty members. The protest started among two groups of students including Students Against Racism, who were favoring diversity, and the American Student Organization, who were opposing diversity. The protest resulted in the arrest of 64 students and injury of three university police officers. Sixty three students were sent to the County Jail, and Susan J. Keegan, attorney for many students, noted that a bail of $500 would be set up for each arrested person. According to police, 54 arrested students belong to Students Against Racism, and they were trespassing the state property after refusing to disperse. Twelve students resisted arrest and 15 students were charged with assault as they threw rocks and bottles at police officers.
In the previous months, several incidents prompted the regents to work on cultural diversity training for all. Those incidents included fraternity party having “ghetto” theme; a sorority having a party with “Taco Tuesday” theme; the talk of Randy Jennings against immigrants and Muslims, and the insult of Jews and Africans-Americans through spray paints.
Margaret Magnuson, University President, denounced all those incidents. However, she defended the appearance of Jennings, reporting that banning him would be against the free speech. After considering those thoughts, two opposing groups assemble to pressurize the regents meeting in the Regents Hall. Initially, they yelled but after about 20 minutes the demonstration started going out of hand as reported by the University Police Chief Barclay Peterson. One group was in favor of diversity while the other was against diversity. Extra police officers came when the protesters started marching. Jonathan Walterson, who was the president of Students Against Racism noted that the presence of police resulted in increased violence. However, Walterson was also arrested. On the other hand, Peterson noted that Walterson was wrong and the police did not initiate the conflict. He said that protesters stopped near the Liberal Arts Building, and the police were trying to disperse them. At noon by 12:55 p.m., the demonstration reached its worst state. However, by 1:30 p.m., most of the demonstrators started moving back and/or arrested. The regents started considering the matter in more detail.
