Achievements in the study of the basic properties of X-rays rightfully belong to the German scientist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen. Amazing properties of X-rays, immediately received a huge response in the scientific world. Several experiments proved that it is an electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength of 8-10 cm, which occupies an intermediate position between ultraviolet and gamma waves. X-rays have great penetrating power, which depends on the wavelength, the density and thickness of the layer of the irradiated material. X-rays have an effect on living organisms. This radiation can be a catalyst for some photochemical reactions and X-rays can ionize atoms.
Not all of these aspects of the devastating effects of the X-ray exclude surprisingly broad aspects of their application. The X-ray radiation is used in the study of the structure of molecules and crystals, X-ray inspection (in industry detection of defects in the products), and methods of medical research and treatment. The most important use of X-rays became possible due to a very small length of the entire range of these waves and their unique properties. The ability of X-rays to have biological effects on the tissues is used in medicine for the therapy of tumors.
Soon after the discovery of the remarkable X-ray, scientists revealed that the X-radiation has an effect on the person. It turned out that the new radiation can cause changes in the skin that resembles a sunburn, but with deeper skin damage. These ulcerations required a long time for healing. Ignorance of the possible consequences led to amputation of fingers among researchers who dealt with these insidious rays. Gradually, we found out that these injuries could be avoided by reducing the time and radiation dose by using lead shielding and remote process management.
Albeit serious consequences from exposure to X-rays, we should not overestimate their risk in medical examinations. They are held only on certain parts of the body for a very short period. The use from X-rays is greater than the risk of this procedure for the human body.
