Introduction:
Where there has been made progress in all the other fields of work and industries, the industry of weaponry has also progressed by leaps and bounds. The pace with which the industry has spread is alarming for the policy makers around the world as it poses threats to the well-being of the human kind.
The profitability and the wealth statuses of the holding companies that manufacture weapons of mass destruction including both nuclear and non-nuclear weapons have increased tremendously whereas the safety of the general public keeps on getting more and more at risk in the presence of these weapons.
Defense Purposed Weapon Arsenal:
It is a very common phrase that the countries who stockpile weapon systems of mass destruction claim that they are doing it for the sake of their own protection. This claim cannot be challenged because the conflicts are very common around the world and almost every country feels a need to possess weapons to alarm the others.
Although, the purpose here is not to use these weapons but to make sure that balance is maintained between a certain country and its conflicting countries so that none of them tries to do misadventure. This would endanger the security of the regions.
Skepticism of the other Countries:
When a country possesses weapons of mass destruction in a large quantity, it raises the concerns of other countries regarding the intentions of that country to use these weapons for. Therefore, the accumulation of weapons of mass destruction by a certain country can prove to cause severe diplomatic disadvantage to that country.
What happens is that when one country starts accumulating weapons of mass destruction, the other countries in the region start feeling the pressure of making weapon arsenals of their own so that they can exert pressure in the region that no country tries to violate their sovereignty.
Weapon Race:
As a result of this, there gets initiated a race of accumulating weapons and stockpiling arsenals that cause serious negligence of other important things that government must do. This would include the spending of taxpayers’ money on health and education.
The development of the public becomes a very far pushed back priority of a government once it starts to spend the budgets on acquiring expensive warfare equipment. The warfare equipment is considered to be very strategic and hence very secret. It is also very expensive to purchase.
A ripple effect of the weapons race results in the fact that the entire region starts purchasing weapons of mass destruction, and the other important public functions get neglected in the entire region. This causes the entire region to become less prosperous.
High Cost of Maintenance:
Once the weapons of mass destruction have been acquired it is even more costly to maintain these assets. It takes a lot of people to protect these assets and the security systems installed for this purpose also cost a lot of money (Simons, 2002).
Additionally, the weapons of mass destruction are always a cause of threat to the people living in the surrounding areas. For example, an occasion of a nuclear meltdown would become a catastrophe and is a very highly probable event even with the protection facilities of today. The world has witnessed that when the protection of weapons of mass destruction fails, there take place serious accidents and result in the killing of numerous people.
