The Greek government claims that the British Museum does not have the lawful right to possess the Parthenon Marbles. The main reason for it as they say is that Lord Elgin received the permission for the export in very dubious way. At the time when this event happened the whole territory of Greece was under the Turkish occupation, hence the Greek people had had to be consulted about the removal of the Parthenon Marbles. The British government contradicts to this claim and proves this right by the international legislation that existed at that time. The British side paid full price when purchased the Elgin Marbles and it is the reasonable argument why it is to be stayed in Britain. The fortune of the Elgin Marbles is now being considered by the European Court of Justice and sooner it will determine whether it has a legitimate base to view this case or not.
On my subjective opinion, the Greek government seems to be more persuasive. As the majority of the Greek people I am suspicious that the British Museum actually does not have the right for possession of the Elgin Marbles. It is rather the issue of morality because the historical situation developed in such a way that the Elgin Marbles were brought to Britain by chance. To my mind, the Greek people should have the right to decide the fortune of the Parthenon Marbles on their own. The second reason I have to back up my point of view is that the vast majority of people in Britain spoke in favor for the transfer of the Elgin Marbles back to Greece. Therefore, the British authorities should not ignore the opinion of the British people while considering the case.
