It is worth mentioning that being in a management position requires a lot of responsibility and commitment. In essence, a manager coordinates the the employees’ efforts as well as other activities at the workplace to ensure the organization meets its goals and targets. The manager determines whether a firm will move from one level to another or not. As a result of this, such an individual needs skills that would enable him or her to become an efficient leader.
One of the most important skills that a manager needs to have is communication. Notably, this is necessary as one has to pass across a message in a way that is efficient and straight to the point (Robles, 2012). A manager needs to communicate with all the people at a firm in the manner that each one of them would understand. Primarily, proper communication helps a manager as well as the employees to avoid confusions at the workplace. Communication entails more than just speaking and leaders may need to compile written communication to both the employees and the top leadership of the organization in the form of reports, memos, and letters. For example, when addressing issues such as workers’ performance, the leader can only use a written form of communication in such a situation.
Another important set of skills that a manager needs to have are organizational skills. In this regard, a professional needs to organize departments, oversees issues, and implement strategies at the department (Robles, 2012). The organizational skills enable an individual to be orderly. For instance, when a person wants to perform a job evaluation of the employees working under him or her, organizational skills would enable him or her to know where to start and how to carry out the activity.
The third set of skills that are important for a manager is leadership skills. A manager is a leader as he or she has many people following him and constantly waiting for his instructions. A good leader influences the behavior of his followers (Robles, 2012). A manager, therefore, needs to know how to influence the workers under him or her in a positive manner. In other words, a person needs to lead by example.
