In the 1960’s, America underwent changes socially, politically and economically leading to changes in its social set up. The decade ended up referred to as a sexual revolution because of the rejection of some sexual norms, beliefs and behaviors and adoption of others (Williams, 2012). Sexual revolution led to changes in the western society allowing other sexual orientations apart from heterosexual. Additionally, the era resulted in the use of contraceptives in western society. When critically analyzed; it is evident that the sexual revolution in the western society had some lasting effect. Women attaining of power and control is one of the lasting impacts. The innovation and legalizing of contraceptives caused women to gain power and control over birth control. According to Williams (2012), women started to venture into socio-economic activities without the limitation of pregnancy because of birth control measures by the use of contraceptives. Sexual revolution also had the lasting effect of changes in the sexual behaviors. The impact of changed sexual behavior increases from one generation to the other. What ended up considered as sexual norms, beliefs and behavior ended up changed to the adoption of other sexual orientations and controversies. The era led to the increased pre-marital and ex-marital sex in the Western society (Williams, 2012). The traditional sexual cultures that regarded sex as sacred turned out diluted leading to commercial sex and pornography in the society. The changes made by sexual revolution have led to negative effects in the society. The increasing use of contraceptives has increased the chances of prostitution in the society hence more cases of HIV/AIDS and other STI. The disorder in the social set up today is out of the effects brought up by sexual revolution. Increasing levels of teen pregnancy, lesbianism and homosexuality is out of rejection of sexual norms during 1960’s. Arguably, the sexual revolution has led caused more harm than good in the society because of the progression in sexual controversies from one generation to the other (Williams, 2012).
