Arguably, I disagree with the legalization of marijuana in Illinois because the public has not been informed on the harm. Illinois should have learned the effects of legalized marijuana on the society from other states. Based on the news and reports from various media sources I disagree with the legalization of marijuana in Illinois. Legalization of marijuana put at risk the intelligence of children. Marijuana reduces the IQ of children. Marijuana block the formation of memory, which means that children risk cognitive impairment in the future (Bennett, 2016). Also, the prisons population will increase because those who are not supposed to access the drug will consume. Institutions in Illinois risk disruptions and violence (Chicago Tribune, 2016). Drug-related expulsions and suspensions may increase. College students are expected to be the highest consumers of the drug. This is a clear indication that the drug adversely affects the young generation. Crime in Illinois will increase because of the legalization of marijuana. Use of marijuana increases fear, distrust, panic and anxiety. These social behaviors are dangerous to the cohesion of society (Bennett, 2016). Dropping and absenteeism in schools is expected to be a norm in Illinois. This is a common outcome of the youth using marijuana.
The use of marijuana in Illinois is expected to increase hospitalization. This is because of health effects of marijuana. Marijuana has substances that cause cancer. Therefore, Illinois should be ready to channel more resources to health facilities. Road accidents will increase in the state. People who frequently use marijuana make wrong judgments. Addiction is also another reason why I disagree with the use of the legalization of the drug. Based on the above reasons I disagree with the legalization of marijuana.
