I have learnt that a good leader must uphold an integrity at all times. A leader who upholds integrity is always honest, trustworthy, and responsible, and all that they do is credible. This is a trait that will help me wherever I go and in whatever that I will be doing in the future. As I prepare to be a leader in the near future, it will be good for me to start practising the trait of integrity because without it chances are that I will not succeed in my endeavours. The success of any organization depends on the integrity of its leaders. Taking the example of an organization whose leaders are corrupt, dishonest or incredible, such a company never realises its potential because its leaders swindle and embezzle the funds belonging to the organization. The organization is, therefore, left with no funds that it could use for development. That is not the leader that I long to be in the future. Leaders of high integrity lead the most successful nations. Take the example of the United States of America. Had the heads of state been corrupt, irresponsible or immoral, the United States of America would not be what it is today. We would be lagging behind like most developing states elsewhere all over the world. I am, therefore, happy I attended these lessons.
I have also learnt that transformational leaders communicate their visions to the people. Such communication could be in words during the speeches that they make, through the manner in which they act when managing the affairs of the organization or through symbolism. It is not enough for leaders to carry themselves around as transformational. There is a need to communicate these transformational skills to the other members of the organization so that there is unity as all the stakeholders work together towards transformation of the organization. When leaders keep quiet and they do not communicate their ideas to the workforce, there is always trouble because the junior workers will not understand what their leaders like or hate. This is a trait that I intend to carry forward as I prepare to become a leader in the near future. The best example is when heads of states all over the world address that states to communicate their development plans or even to congratulate the various stakeholders for playing a critical role in moving the country forward.
Finally, I have learnt that good decision making can be hampered by psychological biases, time pressure, social realities and goal displacement. When a leader or any member of the organization allows objective values of the organization to be replaced by subjective values, or even allows the long term goals of the organization to be blinded by short term goals, the organization is doomed to fail sooner than later. Furthermore, when the management of an organization fails to plan ahead so that it is caught up by time pressures, the organization loses focus of its goals and it ultimately fails. It is important for organizations to plan ahead and stick to the plan, so that what is supposed to be done at a particular time is done as required and scheduled. This is a lesson that will assist me a lot in the future. Organisations must also make use of groups for their advantage. Groups ensure that the expertise that individual members of the organization have is enhanced through sharing and discussing it amongst themselves. Lastly, when an organization displaces the goals that it had previously planned to achieve with new goals not previously planned for, it loses focus, and it could fail in the process. I have therefore learnt the art of sticking to set goals and targets. This will assist me very much in the future. It was a wonderful unit.
