Overview: The students will be engaged through the use of worksheets, video clips, reading materials, and presentations in order to development an understanding of global warming. There are various media resources that can generate interest among students in learning more about global warming its causes and the perceived biases found in the media pertaining to the issue.
Purpose: To develop a fundamental awareness among students regarding the consequences of global warming and distinguish the fact from the myth by deciphering media representation of the issue.
Goals: The goal of this lesson is to expose the students to environmental issues through the lenses of science and media representation. In addition, the students are expected to develop a clear understanding of global warming, review related information source, utilize learning materials, identify bias in the media, and answer the central question of the topic “is global warming real or a mere speculation?”
Classroom Activity:
Assignment/Handouts: The Temperature History of the Earth What We Know and How We Know It, background reading and Student worksheet.
Standards (from Goals): understands the context of the lesson and the topic about global warming based on the responses on the worksheet
Methods (from Activities): Effective summative assessment
Materials and Resources (from Activities): Video Clips, Presentation, and Worksheet
Rationale:
The activities planned for the class is expected to meet the goals of the lesson because the materials used are composed of multimedia and traditional tools paired with knowledge application activity. Understanding the topic of global warming in the classroom setting requires introduction of topic before the actual lesson in order to prepare the student and establish their prior knowledge of the topic. This was achieved by handing out reading material that provides the background of the topic. In addition, the presentation serves as the purpose of reaffirming the prior knowledge before transitioning to the main lesson aided with a multimedia tool, which is the use of video clips. Lastly, reinforcing the given knowledge in the lesson can be established by applying them in a discussion and in this lesson, the students were engaged in a debate using the information they obtained from the lesson. It is expected that not all students will demonstrate interest in the topic particularly in the discussion exchange because not all students have the same level of comprehension. For the students that are having problems understanding the topic, they will be paired with student that has stronger comprehension and showed interest in the topic. Furthermore the decision in pairing students to work side by side with their worksheet was based on the rubric. The next initiative of the lesson that will prepare the student to a more in-depth and scientific understanding of global warming is to design an experiment that will enable them to see actuality of the concepts discussed in this lesson. This lesson plan was created based on the ideas developed by Linda Jensen on Lesson Planning approach and effective practices (Celce-Murcia).
