In the light of recent events that transpired on the Polk County network, I believe we need to have a proper dialogue regarding the recovery of our virtual environment in the event of a potential disaster/failure. With the rapid growth and heavy reliance of our virtual environment, I believe it’s time we begin looking into some type of software solution to take image level backups of our virtual guest servers. The majority of the City’s mission critical application servers reside on our virtual farm; in case of a true disaster/failure, we would have an extremely hard time restoring/recovering without the vendor involvement. A few months back we experienced such an issue when the Munis application’s server failed. If we had a true recovery solution in place at the time, that server would have been back online in 10 to 15 minutes.
We currently take file level backups of our production servers, which are known to work well if you only need to restore a deleted/corrupt file. This level of backup typically does not provide any assistance when the entire virtual server fails and needs to be rebuilt. I believe almost 85% of our server infrastructure consists of virtual machines, the number of which is expected to be increased even more.
HP, VMware, and Veeam all have offer products that fully meet our growing needs. I have installed several of these solutions in a test environment and found the Veeam’s recovery solution (www.veeam.com) to be very straight forward and the easiest in terms of usage. WRA and Airport currently take image level backups of their VM environment and I believe our environment is quite a bit larger and would affect more users should we experience any type of failure.
