I learnt to read the alphabets when I was three years old. It is my mother who taught me to read the alphabet before I joined formal schooling. This process of reading was a bit unorthodox since I learnt specific letters of the alphabet before others and, consequently, how to put them together. Specifically, I learnt to read A-F and then G-S and finally T-Z. My mother made sure that I was supplied with picture books and read me bed stories regularly. Every night, I would sit on the lap of my mother and father, and they would read me stories. By the time I was four and a half, I had learnt to read children stories by myself. I remember at that time, being a restless child, I who would hardly sit in the same position when my parents were reading me stories or helping me read the books.
At school, my teacher always stressed that we read books aloud while others were listening and following along. As such, I began to be a better reader in interesting creative writings. Even though I learnt to read long ago as a kid, the influence of TV has largely contributed to my fading interest in reading long pieces of writing. Today, I am only motivated to read short pieces of literature such as magazines and Sunday comics. In some instances, due to peer pressure or promises of a reward, I am induced to read interesting longer classical stories such as Shakespeare’s literal works. I have, however, recently changed my reading strategy; today, when I am reading a book, I make sure that I have a dictionary with me, and then I switch off the video game. This has enabled me to be more confident in reading books that previously I could not read. Lately, I am improving my readings especially those related to economics and political history of developing nations of the world. I always ask the librarian and my peers on the books they recommend me to buy or borrow for my readings.
