There are very few instances in our life which have the potential of changing our lives for the better. For me, it was my brother’s graduation. Two years ago my brother graduated from Manchester University in the United Kingdom. He spent five years studying engineering in the United Kingdom. He invited us for his graduation ceremony, my mother was too busy and she couldn’t come with us so, my father and me went there. My brother’s graduation influenced me to move abroad and pursue quality education outside the United Arab Emirates. His graduation fascinated me and from that day I made my mind to follow his steps and get my degree from the United States of America.
My brother is the closest person to me and we share all our secrets like close friends do, and I think no one knows him like I do. Therefore, by looking at his face, I could tell that it was the happiest day of his life. Actually, everybody on that day was very happy, some of them were graduating and the others were happy for their friends and loved ones. I went and sat besides my brother and said, ”I have never seen you happier than you are today, can you tell me why?” He said to me, “Brother, it’s not just graduation, I waited for this moment my whole life to meet all the family expectations, and to make all of you proud of me and it was my prime purpose of going to the University”.
I was surprised by my brother’s answer, because he spent five years away from his country and his family for a reason like that. I didn’t understand it initially, but when I saw my father’s face, I could feel his words going through my mind again. I asked my father about how the graduation made him feel, he answered with tear filled eyes,“ It means that your mother and I did a great job in raising him. We always strived to raise both of you up in the best way possible; the graduation hat on your brother’s head is a testimony to the fact. I have always wanted you and your brother to have a life that I couldn’t have and to see you both successful and live a comfortable life”.
When I heard my father that day and saw him proud of my brother, I made up my mind to make him and my whole family proud of me, I decided to go abroad and graduate from a reputed university. That moment caused a lot of changes in my attitude towards life. We got back to our country and I decided to study hard in high school to get a scholarship for higher studies in the United State of America. At the end of the next year, I got a letter in the mailbox that said that I had been accepted for higher education with a good scholarship.
That was the happiest moment in my life, and I knew that I could do what my brother did and make my family proud of me. I told my father about it and his pat on my back made me realize that I had been successful in making him proud of me, like my brother. Although, at the beginning he didn’t want me to go and leave him and my mother alone in the house, but when I told my father that this was my dream and that I wanted to follow my brother’s steps, he agreed and encouraged me to go.
My brother’s graduation had a lasting impression on my life and made me decide about what I wanted to from my life. I made up my mind that day to study hard and make my family proud of me and to show my father that he indeed did an incredible job of raising me. Small moments in our lives can decide our future and can open our minds to life and make us see life through different perspectives. One thing I strongly recommend to all my dear ones is to look forward to their future and follow the steps of the people they admire and that will be my suggestion to each of my readers.
