The terror attack of 9/11 and the subsequent terror attacks have led to greater and intensive scrutiny of the Muslims in many parts of the world especially in Britain and America. The identity of Muslims was compromised due the issue of security and terror related activities. Muslims have therefore been subjected to strict security measures since most of them were suspects of terrorism. The integrity of the Muslim community was questioned in Britain and western countries making them more affiliated to terror attacks. The minority Muslim community therefore faced difficulties in integrating into the society as well as interaction with other members of the community. This made the label of Muslim to be exploited as a means of identification rather than provision of self identity of the people.
The misunderstanding between the Muslim community and the rest of the people became rampant thereby affecting the way in which people interacted in the society. The misconceptions relating to terrorism and Muslims became rampant in most parts of the Western countries and Britain. The external label on Muslims was imposed inhibiting the self-identity of Muslims. The perception concerning the Muslim community with respect to terrorism continued to evolve thereby compromising the self identity of Muslims in most parts of the world as well as the conflicts between Muslims and Christians in most countries all over the world. The rift was widened by the random display of Muslims in the internet and social sites as well as opinion blogs as terrorists all over the world.
In the context of this movie, both the liberal and conservative Muslims were displayed. The characters like Fatima and Baber were very conservative in the way they relate with the other communities in Prairies of Canada. Both Fatima and Baber demonstrated the strictness with respect to norms and beliefs of Islam making them difficult to interact with the other people from the neighboring communities in the town. On the hand the liberal view of Islam was shown by characters like Rayyan and Amaar thereby enabling the Muslims to interact with the non-Muslims in the society with respect to many societal factors. The liberal view of Muslims facilitates positive interaction among the people thereby enabling sufficient security in the diverse community. The liberal view of the Muslim community embraced the issues like feminism which were conventionally not allowed in a pure Muslim society. The aspects relating to dress code were not of great concern in this community.
The Muslim society in Canada is different from the one in a pure Muslim society due to the fact in Canada the Muslims interacted more with people from other cultures and religions making them to be absorbed. The dress code of Muslims living in Canada is liberalized as opposed to the purely Muslim society which is very strict in respect to the women dressing mode. Being a Muslim in Canada, one is free to embrace liberal issues and aspects like feminism while in a purely Muslim society such issues of feminism were not condoned. The Muslims in Canada appears to enjoy freedom especially with aspects relating to feminism. The Muslims in Canada are also integrated in the global community enabling them to appreciate the diversity of cultures all over the world. The Muslim women therefore enjoy more freedom in Canada than those living in Muslim dominated countries.
