Living things have specific superior characterizes that distinguish them from nonliving items. Living things are characterized by their internal organization, which is composed of cells (Alcamo, 1998).
A rock to a snail
Ideally, a snail is a living thing while a rock is a nonliving. The two differ widely based on the eight characteristics of living things. A snail performs nutrition to obtain energy and experiences respiration as energy is released for use in the cells. Also, a snail moves to different locations since it responds to stimuli and it excretes due to chemical reactions in the body. Additionally, a snail grows and reproduces offspring. Lastly, a snail can adapt to a certain environment which happens over an extended period of time. A rock does not exhibit any of these characteristics.
A rock to a tree
Even though a tree is not an animal, it is a living thing while a rock is not living. The comparable character between a tree and a lock is that they both remain in a certain geographical location. However, a tree has various forms of movement. Trees can bend and grow towards a particular direction since they are sensitive to stimuli. A tree also moves its roots in search for water and mineral salts and thus, has a nutrition process. Trees perform respiration as “food” is transported to different parts such as leaves, branches, and flowers. Further, trees excrete waste products, grow and reproduce (Davey, 1927).
A dog to a TV
A dog is a living thing while a television is a nonliving item. However, they both share some characteristics of living things. Both undergo nutrition and respiration. A TV obtains energy from electricity and transforms it into a useful form which is them transmitted to all the parts in the set. This process mimics the intake of food, digestion, and respiration in a dog. Nevertheless, a dog and TV exhibit differences in other characteristics. A dog excretes waste materials, moves around since it is sensitive to stimuli. Furthermore, a dog grows, it can reproduce and adapt to a certain environment.
Characterizes of fire
Fire exhibits some characteristics of living things in its existence. Fire can grow and move towards material that allows it to continue glowing. Also, fire is sensitive since it stops when it perceives fire extinguishing materials. Lastly, fire produces byproducts which can be termed as excretion.
