The Christian Monitor of Science Jack Schneider is the author of the article about America’s history of school shootings that has been there for a long time. His lead to advocating laws that was stricter. The article was published immediately when President Obama in his press conference announced the plans he had in order to reduce this rampant gun violence. The shooting that occurred first was older than America, it happened in the year 1764. This happened when some four Lenape warriors went ahead and shot one of the teachers in front of the students. Since that time people had different views and motives were varied, but the effect it caused always had a similar grim.
There have been a lot of cases on shootings both in schools and at home in the United States of America. This has been due to gun ownership that is unregulated when there is violence in an area. There is time when 20 youths and six adults were murdered Spree shooting in a grade school in the Connecticut community. The man who killed him ended up killing himself and his mother. The nation is appalled by such killings and mass violence.
There are three groups of people who are commonly affected by these shootings; these include wives, young African –American men and most of the people who are facing depression. The author in this article chose the right audience; he is addressing those who are afflicted by the shootings. He is trying to give them solutions on how to curb gun shootings. He has addressed his audience effectively by also giving them views on what other scholars have said. This makes them understand why it is important for them to stay away from guns. The more they possess the guns the more they kill each other.
According to (Schneider n.p) many of the proposals that Obama came up with regarding the gun control meet a lot of resistance form the NRA lobby which is very powerful. Some of the leaders were ready to act and this was to be done by gaining moral courage. They suggested that the shootings can only be controlled by introducing more guns. Obama was right because he wanted to burn people from owning guns and gun assault. The people form the RNA believed that guns were not the problem and that the problem was that values of the people were eroding.
Most of the scholars found possession of guns to be dangerous because they make violence to be more deadly. There was a research that was done by the Harvard Injury Control Research Center and they found that if they release more guns it will mean that they will be increased murders in the country. A tighter control of laws on guns may lead few deaths that are gun related. The opinion of the NRA and the public about the control of the guns was said to slide in the wrong direction. Their opinion could not help to control the school shootings but rather increase them.
What the NRA did was opposing gun control. According to researcher called Gallup, said that in the instance where the gun laws were strict the figures of school shootings decreased from 62% in 2000 and 44% in the year 2010. The shootings rose again in the year same year up to 58% in December, this was because of Sandy Hook Shootings. We see that all these scholars that presented their ideas have expertise and have knowledge that is relevant to the subject matter even though they oppose the NRA.
The use of language is appropriate because we see that the commentary is sad and so the language used is in line with the commentary. We see the spectacular sequences of shootings in the classrooms, theaters and malls. The language also has a warning and advising tone whereby the audience is being advised to regulate the possession of guns. He expresses the dire need of regulating America. He urges them to unite as a nation and stop the senseless bloodshed that has been going on for such a long time. He even came up with campaigns that helped them to avoid the misleading arguments. The author here even urges the president that when he speaks he should speak telling his people about the deepest sympathy and give them condolences for the loss. This was both to the parents and the students. This shows that language has been used appropriately through the whole text. The mood of the whole paper is sad and so people are using a language that expresses the same.
Obama in this case was right and RNA was wrong because the RNA opposed the laws that were put to govern gun control. They said that when they prohibit students from carrying guns to school they will not stop the gunmen from shooting. This would not really stop the loss of life. They gave the instance of Mercaz Harav Massacre whereby there was an attack and the attacker was stopped by a student and not the police. The student stopped the attacker by shooting him with his personal gun which he carried lawfully was hidden. There is also an incident that happened at the Virginia law school where by a student stopped an attacker without firing. This made the NRA to see that guns can be used by all since such incidents show how important the guns can be. These changed the victims who were helpless into defenders who are armed.
Obama on the other hand enacted laws that could reduce these killings. They could not tolerate that anymore. Despite the fact that the laws were enacted he urged the people to try hard to prevent the evil from society. Laws might be there but people still commit wrongs. He even went ahead and brought professionals who talked to people about this tragedy. This included even parents and educators. Although the guns cannot be abolished completely they tried to come up with laws that will reduce gun violence. They could not abolish because some of the people go hunting using guns and this will cause a lot of inconveniences to them.
Finally we see that this article is majorly addressing the problem of school shootings in the United States. It is addressing the controversy between NRA and Obama regarding the issue of school shootings. They give different opinions about the same but then we find out that NRA is wrong about the issue. The opinions they give do not really give a solution to the problem but they may make the problem worse. The author can be given support regarding the issue in that the opinion that the scholars and Obama gave are good. They can really help in solving the issues of school shootings.
