Introduction
The shortage of Registered Nurses in the United States has led to a surge in the demand for registered nurses. This phenomenon has been reflected globally with some countries registering a low of about 1000 patients for one nurse. Because of this, many hospitals are having great difficulty recruiting nurses. The supply of nurses is far from the demand of nurses. This is the reason the gap is filled up with immigrant workers from places such as India, Africa, and Eastern Europe. While most of the nurses are educated in the country, the shortage of nursing graduates in the country means that there will be an increased demand for nurses educated abroad.
The field of nursing is going to grow rapidly in the coming years. However, the growth of nursing will not satisfy the demand of nurses. In short, there will be a looming shortage of nurses. The labor requirements for countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom would have to be relaxed to allow for immigration of nurses from other English speaking countries. In the UK, foreign born nurses have already outnumbered UK born nurses. The shortage of nurses means that nurses have to deal with long hours of work while the pay for nursing is increasingly rapidly. The biggest reorganization is that nurses will continue to be paid more even as nursing shortages continue. This is demonstrated in the graph below.
There is a demonstrable shortage in the supply of nurses. This explains why nurses are paid more. For this reason, nurses from abroad are attracted to leading nations such as the United States and the United Kingdom for opportunities. In 1995, the United States provided temporary working visas for nurses from other countries to mitigate through the nursing shortage that the country was going through. Majority of the nurses in the United States are whites who constitute 90 percent of the registered nurses. Other minorities are under-represented in this field.
The recommendation that I make is that the government should increase the supply of nurses by offering more incentives to study nursing such as scholarships, low tuition and offering good remunerations for people in the nursing field. With good remuneration, the country will pull a big number of its citizens into the nursing field that will mitigate the problem of nursing.

C. The current work force in The St. Louis Jewish Memorial Hospital focuses on the need to have nurses who are committed to professional ethics and the old style system of work that do not allow flexibility in the work field. While the current work force is effective in meeting the demand of the company, it does not meet the needs of the 21st century because of its overemphasis on the book. The modern work forces require versatility and adaptability of workers to fit the needs of a very diverse world. Masters (2012) writes that strategic human resource management is essential for a company that is hiring, firing, and compensating.
A company must ensure that it has a human resource management unit that is up to the task and can meet the needs of its employers even as the company aspires to meet the company’s needs and maximize profits. Terry Masters (2012) argues that sound human resource management is beneficial to the company in terms of reducing cost and handling employee’s remunerations, compensation and termination of employment. Companies strive to meet the needs of its employers cultivates a work environment that is both convenient and productive. It is in order for a company to create an environment that encourages its workers success. A pleasant work environment increases productivity of workers.
In addition to creating a healthy work environment, a company should have a recruitment strategy that looks for the most promising applicants. Testing the potential of the future workers requires that prospective employees be subjected to tests, skits, as well as situations that assist in determining their morality and ethics of work. A successful recruitment system reduces chances of firing thus reducing the costs that may arise because of such situations.
