“Lord of the Flies” is a debut allegoric novel written in 1954 by a Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. The novel intended to be an ironic commentary on “The Coral Island” by R.M. Ballantyne (1858) – an adventurous story for the young generation praising the optimistic imperial conception of the Victorian England.
The novel depicts the life of a group of children during the wartime on a deserted island, who survived a plane crash during evacuation from England. As a result of the elections Ralph has been chosen as the community leader. He strives to establish an upright and accurate way of life on the island with a strong hope for forthcoming rescue. However, these events were not welcomed by another potential leader Jack, who tended to govern the life on the island, despite the fact that his actions were rather destructive. The life on the island is divided into two contrary poles.
“The beast” is another serious problem facing the children on the island. Of course, “the beast” does not exist. It lives inside the children’s minds – he is an integral part of them. Nevertheless, the fear does not vanish; on the contrary every new day brings more and more horror into the hearts of the young islanders. In my opinion, children are incapable of distinguishing the bad and the good; they are unable to foresee the consequences of their actions; they are rather narcissistic. Personally I believe that children in solitude with each other transform into wild animals, into predators ready to attack one another when feeling threat towards their prosperity or authority.
To my mind, “Lord of the Flies” is stunningly truthful. Through exploring the mysterious mazes of the human soul this historic novel and philosophic parable is the literature classic of the XX century.
