Louis Kahn made the Salk Institute from the time of 1959 to 1966 (GreatBuildings.com). The building composes of laboratories. John Salk, inventor of polio vaccine hired Louis Kahn as the architect of the building. John had a unique idea about the building. John’s ideas combined with Louis’s designs gave a building, which was maintenance free to some extent, simple, and long lasting. Since it completion, the building is considered as one of the great architectural structure present (Salk.edu).
Twenty-nine constructions make up this grand institution. On the length of a well-structured courtyard are six identical buildings. Each building has 6 floors, three of which consists of labs and the remaining three of stores.
Technical Diagram
Given Below is the technical diagram of the structure.
All parts of the building are identical. This technical diagram shows that each of the two floors consist of laboratory and store. This ease out the problem of distances as each laboratory is fully equipped with the store in the floor beneath.
Floor Plan
Above given diagram shows the floor plan of the building.
Elevation Plan
(a)
