As an English Teacher, my motives for applying to this course are clear: I want only to build upon and improve my already excellent linguistic talents. As I am currently studying for your Postgraduate Diploma in Education, where I major in English, I feel you have prepared me for the rigours of further education in this area. It is because of a particular unit of this course, Subject Curriculum and Teaching that I feel I could greatly benefit from further study in this area. My ultimate aim is simply to improve my understanding of the English language and then pass on this knowledge to my students.
My reason for wanting to study this program at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, is that having studied there before, I was extremely impressed with the level of support I received during my studies: both the academic and the administrative staff enabled me to develop fantastic linguistic abilities while also growing as a person.
My teaching career is my passion and I am grateful to the University for empowering me to achieve this; now I would like to enhance my skills further and I can think of no better place in which to do this. English is a deeply complex and fascinating language which has captured my heart: I want to convey this passion to my students. Undertaking this course would benefit both me and them, as they would receive teaching from a more learned teacher, while I can also indulge in my favourite topic. As a result of further study, I hope that I will be able to be both flexible and ambitious in my future career plans. As an English Teacher, I believe that as English is among the most spoken languages on the planet, it is vital that students of all ages are given the opportunity to study it under the guidance of the best teachers available, as I was so fortunate to do. I am determined to meet those high standards as part of my desire to empower students to access the world’s cultures and to broaden their horizons: the world is an increasingly smaller place with the advent of globalization and the internet; young people need to be able to access this global market place with a high degree of linguistic understanding.
My knowledge of English, as I have already demonstrated, is of an extremely high standard. Having also studied for and achieved a Higher Diploma in Bilingual Communication, as well as a bachelor’s degree in English for Professional Communication, it is clear that I am committed to my studies in this area and the next, natural step is to study for my masters in English Language Teaching. I believe that my understanding of the language is more than sufficient to assist me during this course. However, while I do not profess to know everything, I feel that my areas of weakness should only serve as more reasons for why I should undertake this course. I believe that language is a constantly-evolving thing and as such, my education will never be complete: I intend to continue my studies for as long as time permits for the sake of my students and also because it is my life’s goal to achieve the best of everything that I turn my hand to.
