Management information system can be defined as a special form of information system that helps in providing information in a computerized way for management of the enterprise. Interdependence between the firms information system and business capabilities are growing with time and business invest heavily on their information system to achieve success.
There are numerous ways in which information system have transformed business, one way being the increased use of wireless communication such as mobile phones and wireless telecommunication devices. These devices help in keeping managers, suppliers, customers, business partners and employees in touch all the time. Another way of business transformation is increased the trend of e-commerce and online advertising. Internet has opened diverse methods of communication and working and selling products online for the business world. Due to increased use of internet by people, firms prefer to promote their product online rather than the former modes of advertisement. Third way in which information system has transformed business is previously records of assets, and daily business chores were handled manually but with the use of information system, industries perform these tasks with the help of information system. (Brien, 1996)
There is a big difference between computer literacy and information systems literacy. Information systems literacy is a broad knowledge about all information systems. It includes knowledge about hardware, software, peripherals and other technical components related to most information systems. On the other hand, computer literacy can be defined as basic knowledge about computer such as the working about the hardware and software of the computer. It is basic knowledge about information technology.
Information systems are very helpful for organizations in all dimensions. Talking about management dimensions; it helps the organization in making organizational strategies, creating new products and distributing financial and human resources efficiently. From technological dimension, information systems consist of telecommunication technology, data management technology, hardware and software of the computer. Lastly, describing organizational dimension of information system; it includes culture, business processes, functional specialties, functional specialties and organization’s hierarchy.
