This article is found in the website of the Bucks Community College. It purposes to guide students on how to approach their studies in terms of time and study environment. For community college students this is crucial considering that most of them have to juggle between family responsibilities, job requirements and academic needs. The following is a revision evaluation of the article based on content, organization, style and readability.
Organization
Revising the organization of a text means establishing whether the text is planned in such a manner that it is easy to comprehend for the reader (McLean 130). This article has very useful information but the organization, especially at the beginning, is wanting. The initial section of this article should serve as an introduction instead of being titled “Time Management” yet the section that follows is titled “Using Time Wisely”. The article, however, has good transitions because the author guides the reader from one area to the other. For example, at the beginning of the section entitled “Study Environment”, the author tells the student that “once you have found time to study” as a way of linking with the previous section on “Using Time Wisely” (Bucks Community College).
When revising the style of a text, the focus is on how language and grammar are utilized in delivering the message appropriately (McLean 130). This article blends both formal and informal strategies. While this is meant to be formal information, the author addresses the article directly to the reader/student as evidenced by the use of the second-person pronoun “you”. The reader/student is asked directly to consider aspects of study that are crucial to academic excellence. The tone is friendly and conversational. For example the author tells the reader “You might have all the time in the world, but if you don't use it wisely, it won't help you to meet your goals” (Bucks Community College). The diction is also appropriate because there are no technical terms but common words related to academics.
Readability
A readable document is one that the intended reader can easily comprehend (McLean 130). As noted under “style” the words chosen in this text are appropriate for the audience which means that it is readable. The fact that the author breaks down the article into sections and sub-sections which are well-numbered also makes this article accessible to readers. In addition, the author blends short and long sentences and utilizes direct questions to the reader to elicit critical thinking. Moreover, the topics and sub-topics are in bold which helps the reader to quickly grasp the concepts especially when pressed for time. The article also takes a short time to read and understand.
