Mandatory Flu Vaccines Essay Example

Vaccines are administered to prevent one from contracting a particular disease. Several common vaccinations are very advisable. It is a risk if they are not administered to children when they are young. They are left prone to contracting serious illnesses, either in their childhood or their old age. However, these vaccinations are majorly done out the parent’s free will and intention to protect their children.
Making any vaccination mandatory unless in the outbreak of a pandemic may be termed as an intrusion to free will. Given the low death rate connected to influenza, it does not seem necessary to impose such a rule to the people, though it is highly contagious. The vaccines should be provided, but their administration left to the will of the people.
Considering that no treatment lacks side effects, administration of this vaccine to very young children may end up doing more damage than good, if the child gets a violent allergic reaction to the vaccine. This is highly probable consequence, given the fact that, at very tender ages, it is hard to find out if a child is allergic to something.
If at all, the whole health board is appointed by the mayor who is pushing for the vaccine, an independent opinion about the drug is, therefore, hard to obtain from within the board. An independent body should give their report on it first even before any voting takes place. It is a sensitive issue set to affect the health of so many people. This is, therefore, necessary to avoid any future negative health implications.
The idea of having the vaccine is a very helpful one. However, more deliberations should be done about it, and public opinion should be sought. The right to choose whether to be vaccinated should be left to the individuals.
