Anger is Heat
This is something that makes us angry or something that makes our blood boil. If there is something that makes a person angry, it burns him up and angry feeling, which slowly develops into something more powerful, can be described as a slow burn. A person who is angry is described as breathing fire, ablaze, hot under the collar, or frazzled. An angry person can also be described as boiling, heated, steaming ears, steaming mad, or steamed-up.
My hypothesis over this conceptual metaphor is confirmed based on my observations on people’s characteristics, as well.
Life is a Game
Relating life to the game is something that tells us that our lives go through different obstacles just like how we try to manage our life’s challenges and issues. In relation, a person who has an abundant life can be a person who holds the aces; otherwise he is a real loser, which means he may have most of the bad lucks in life. Its another metaphorical relationship is life is a challenge; life is a sport, life is a competition, or life is a test.
This conceptual metaphor is set by my observation based on how people’s experiences in their own lives are being compared to challenges and tests such as in every game.
Laughter is a Substance
This conceptual metaphor used substance as the source that targets laughter to form a new meaning. This metaphor is related to the expressions such as; she is full of laughs, she exploded with laughter, room filled with laughter and even laughter is contagious. Additionally, it is also related to he cannot hold his laughter much longer, giggling is widespread inside the room, he splits his sides laughing, it is a challenge not to laugh, but you have to keep it, he let out a huge laugh, and they busted their gut laughing.
The hypothesis may conclude that this metaphor can be generalized as it can be related to many different expressions.
Love is a Magic
Based on the observation, this metaphor can be applied to most people who feel it. Whether or not it is positively expressed, this one may be one of the most popular metaphors. It is related to metaphor the magic is gone, which means that love is no longer present between two persons or the love is no longer working. Also, it is related to metaphor, which is she is bewitching in which a woman is like casting a spell over her man so she can gain control. Love is enchanting, which means that love brings full of charm to a person.
My hypothesis in this metaphor explains that magic when applied to love can provide two definitions: a bad love and a good love as magic may portray both positive and negative sense.
Affection is Warmth
Warm is the feeling that normally gives comfort to us. This metaphor is related to an expression such as they gave me their warm welcome, which means that he was welcomed comfortably with joy and care. An expression she took a while to warm me up, which means an extended time was given to a person so as to provide a company or an act of comforting the person was also provided.
The hypothesis for this metaphor is based on the observation about the feeling that I and most of the people experienced as well as from the observation of the difference between warm and cold treatment of a person.
