The maquiladora programs or operations are supposed to be an economic opportunity for the people of northern Mexico due to the large quantities of jobs available. However, it became more of a liability than an asset due to numerous problems associated with the program. First of the three major reasons why the maquiladoras are more of a liability is due to environmental problems caused by these operations. The environmental policies which are implemented in Mexico are not as effective as the policies in the United States. In addition, most of the operations do not follow these environmental policies. Due to these factors, the environmental problems such as pollution and excessive hazardous chemicals in the environment are experience near the borders.
Secondly, the maquiladoras do not provide much benefit to the workers. Most of the operations only provide salaries to workers which are less than the minimum wage of the United States. The poor conditions in the factories could also make workers suffer from high risk of developing health problems. In general, social development is not provided by the maquiladoras. Instead, workers from different parts of northern Mexico suffer from poor working environment and less working benefits from the operations or programs of maquiladoras.
Lastly, the maquiladoras are more of a liability in northern Mexico since it does not result to the development of community in terms of infrastructures. In most cases, places with high job opportunities such as the maquiladoras should result to community development due to the economic growth of both parties. However, workers suffer from extreme poverty in the maquiladora operations due to the low wage and benefits. In addition, the community do not acquire much benefits to the maquiladoras due to the lack of taxation of these operations.
